Plan a Garden Using Geometry

This is a project base class where students use geometrical measurements to plan and create a final drawing of their garden. In this eight-week course, students will practice their skills on how to find perimeter and areas.

Class Experience

Students will learn how to find the area and perimeter while planning a garden.  Students will share how their gardens will be beneficial or add value to their community.  Students will need to know how to add and subtract and mastery of their multiplication tables.
Week 1- Students will explore the perimeter of different shapes with whole numbers. Students will brainstorm and share the different kinds of gardens and any experience planting a garden.
Week 2- Students will explore the perimeter of different shapes with decimals. Students will decide on a garden they will draw in their project.
Week 3- Students will explore the perimeter of different shapes with fractions. Students will brainstorm ways in which their garden will be beneficial or add value to their community.
Week 4- Students will find the area of squares and rectangles. Students will decide on items they would like to plant in their garden and use their math skills to determine the layout of the items in the garden.
Week 5- Students will find the area of a square and rectangle with fractions. Students will continue to work on their garden project.
Week 6- Students will find the area of triangles.
Week 7- Students will find the area of parallelograms and trapezoids.
Week 8- Students will make their final presentations.

Learning Goals

At the end of each week, students will be able to master the area and perimeter of a given figure.  Students will be able to see how area and perimeter are connected to the real world.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am currently a 4th Grade teacher in a private academy with eight years of teaching experience.  I have taught grades 1-8 as well as, ESL students.  I have a Masters in Arts and Teaching for Elementary and Junior High from La Sierra University.  I have taught conversational English to students overseas from Elementary age to adult.  I believe that every child is special and has something great that they can accomplish in life.  My classroom environment is loving, caring, and free thinking. I believe that students should be taught how to think and not just mere reflection of someone’s thought.  I love the outdoors and enjoy hiking, camping, trying new foods, and traveling. I also love animals, however, I currently do not own a pet.
