Beginner Level
This class will be hosted in an online slideshow format, complete with a lecture, and discussion questions. We will be looking at three plagues that swept through parts or the whole of Europe during the Middle Ages (476 C.E. - 1400 C.E.) Specifically, the Plague of 664 in the United Kingdom, the Plague of Justinian in the Mediterranean, and the "Black Death," through the whole of Europe. We will review contemporary records and accounts, see how the diseases look under a microscope, and we will talk about both historical and modern perspectives of each disease. The discussion questions will be for the students interested in participating. Participation is not mandatory.
Learning Goals
This is an introductory course to plagues from the medieval time period. Students will have a better understanding of both the history and the diseases.
