Students generally know not to plagiarize, but often aren't entirely clear on what, exactly, plagiarism is. That makes sense to me--the lines between plagiarism, parody, homage, excerpt, and fanfiction are, after all, blurred in our everyday lives: YouTube videos featuring songs with the lyrics slightly changed, fanfiction posted on popular internet sites, and excerpts of news stories posted on social media. This class seeks to help students understand what, exactly, plagiarism is, and how...
Students should emerge with an understanding of the differences between plagiarism, copying, parody, fanfiction, homage, and researched information.
In addition to being a published author-- whose work has been plagiarized before-- I have also taught writing courses across the world at camps, universities, schools, and seminars. I also edited and reviewed college admissions essays-- where I not only encountered plagiarism on a regular basis, but was asked to quietly commit it. I am eager to help students understand where "the line" is and why respecting that line is so important!
50 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
Below are my general classroom rules and policies. These will also be explained to students when we begin class! -For everyone's safety, and to ensure an engaging and social experience, students are required to have working microphones and video for the entirety of this class, positioned such that we can both hear and see them. -Students are asked not to use filters or virtual backgrounds-- though if there is an important reason to use a virtual background, please just let me know ahead of time that your student will be using one (no questions asked!). -Students will be asked to introduce themselves by sharing their name, pronoun, and a favorite book. -The Zoom text chat is set to "host only", meaning students can chat with me, but not to one another or the entire classroom.
