To begin class the students will review how to use a place value chart to represent numbers. We will review the vocabulary words equation, digit, number, groups and value. We will then jump into learning how to subtract numbers! The students will use their place value charts to draw or use manipulatives to represent the biggest number in the subtraction problem ( The top/first number for this lesson). We will then learn how to take away drawings or manipulatives to find the answer and write the answer properly in the equation. After we have mastered this skill we will practice some subtraction with borrowing. We will review regrouping (compose) then practice breaking down tens and moving them back into the ones place to borrow (decompose).
