Multiplicative Patterns on the Place Value Chart

Join my engaging, self-paced course that follows the Eureka Math format and is aligned with Common Core Standards for rigorous, standards-based learning.

The structure of each Nearpod lesson will be as follows:

- Fluency Practice: Warm-up exercises to build foundational skills.
- Application Problem: Real-world challenges to apply your learning.
- Concept Development: Introduce new concepts and explore key ideas.
- Student Debrief: Review the lesson to reinforce understanding.

Lesson 1: Understanding Place Value from Millions to Thousandths
- Explore how each place value is 10 times larger or smaller than its neighbor.
- Use place value charts to visualize and explain your thinking.
- Understand the order of columns, noting that the thousandths column immediately follows the hundredths.
- Solve problems by multiplying or dividing by 10, 100, or 1,000.

Lesson 2: Exponents in Action – Changing Place Value with Powers of 10
- Write and interpret powers of 10 using exponents.
- Discover how multiplying or dividing by powers of 10 shifts digits left or right.
- Solve problems using exponents and explain how these operations affect digit values.

Lesson 3: Expressing Powers of 10 for Metric Conversions
- Use exponents to denote powers of 10 in metric conversions.
- Master shifting the decimal point correctly when multiplying or dividing by powers of 10.
- Apply these techniques to convert between metric units such as meters to millimeters and kilograms to grams.

Each lesson includes over 30 minutes of bespoke video tuition that can be paused or slowed to accommodate each student's pace. Students engage in a variety of tasks—directly on Nearpod slides or on a whiteboard or paper—and are encouraged to self-check their work. At the end of each lesson, an assignment is submitted and personally reviewed with detailed feedback to ensure every student makes confident progress.

Learning Goals

Place Value Mastery: Students will understand and explain the place value system by comparing, ordering, and manipulating decimals from millions to thousandths, recognizing that each place is 10 times larger or smaller than its neighbor.
Exponential Notation: Students will represent numbers using powers of 10 and articulate how multiplying or dividing by these powers shifts digits, reinforcing the relationship between place values.
