Class Experience

Why would a pirate ship tow barrels of water behind them? Why would they keep flags of all different nations? Why would people publish newspaper advertisements when their friends joined pirate crews? Pirates were incredible tricksters at times, and this class will discuss some of the basic tricks of the trade.

My ultimate goals for this class are to:

1) Encourage creativity. Whether you're playing pirates with beds or boxes for ships, or whether you're writing pirate stories, I want to give...

I've spent several years studying pirate history, reading academic papers and books. I focus on the real history and real events, rather than piracy as portrayed in popular culture.

I will provide students with a pdf afterwards with recommendations for follow-up activities and further resources.

55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.

Pirates were criminals and murders. They were often hung for their crimes. We won't dwell on blood and gore, but we will mention torture in passing.
