Class experience
US Grade 9 - 12
Students will be taught about four talented women warrior writers of the 19th and 20th centuries. They will learn about the battles these women fought and the giants they conquered to prove that the pen is indeed mightier than the sword. Students will discover how these women impacted the culture of their time and see how their influence is still evident today. We will study the lives of each of these writers, read excerpts from the works of each, and discuss the things that make these women...
Students will broaden their literary horizons and learn how four fierce women writers shook the status quo in order to break barriers in the writing world and pave, not only their way, but the way of women writers to this day.
I am a published writer. The title of my book is Mountains and Melancholy: A Collection of Poems About Life With Depression. Also, I was a mental health blogger for the Coping With Depression blog at HealthyPlace.com from August 2017 until April 2020. I'm sharing this information here to show that I am capable of handling this topic in a sensitive and educated manner. The discussions about depression and other mental illnesses and suicide will be handled with gentleness and sensitivity. There will be openness and ample space and time given for students to share their thoughts and feelings. I have been an avid reader since elementary school. I became a passionate reader of female writers when I was in high school and was first introduced to Maya Angelou. I was hooked and never looked back. I have been writing creatively and expressively since I was a child. I taught writing in the public school system for several years. I've been teaching writing to my own children as a homeschool parent for the past sixteen years. I also lead writing workshops for adults. I am currently enrolled in graduate school working on my MA in English. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me.

There will be brief discussions of mental illness, suicide, sexism, and racism. There will also be some discussions about sexuality. Each of these topics will be handled sensitively and with the utmost respect for both students and parents. The discussions about sexism and racism will also be handled in the same way. I will guide the discussion, oversee what is being said, and allow students to express their feelings and thoughts in a safe and respectful manner. As for discussions of sexuality, there will be nothing overt or graphic. The topics will center on liberation and freedom for women and will be handled in a delicate and tasteful manner. Please be assured these discussions are just one facet of the class. Our main focus will be on the courage and strength of these women and the power of their written words.
