Class Experience

At the start of class I will ask if there are any injuries or modifications that might be needed. The class will then begin with a warm-up, stretches, then a series of pilates/dance based exercises to strengthen core muscles, as well as encourage great posture. This will change every class, however there will be core principles taught in each session. The last 10 minutes will be a cool down, breathing exercise and final stretches. There will be a few moments dedicated at the end of each class for a discussion on exercises covered. I teach by demonstration, and through verbal direction. I'm very specific on form, but I don't expect perfection! Everything is a learning process, and if a student can take home one new piece of knowledge a class that is a success. It's about having fun and learning. The students will mostly be following during the class, until the end when there will be time to discuss the exercises we covered and their purpose in more detail. There will be no necessary prior knowledge, however they must be aware they will be physically active, and need any clearance that would be necessary from parents or physician. This class is very low impact, however safety should always come first. The student will need a clear, open space and a soft but firm surface, like a mat on hard floor or a thin carpet. A water bottle is also recommended. As with any physical exercise, there are risks of injury if the exercises are not performed properly, however we will pay strict attention to proper form when initiating new or difficult movements.

Learning Goals

The students will learn a series of pilates and dance movements that encourage proper posture and strength.

Parental Guidance
At times we may refer to some anatomy - I use 'pelvic floor' to encourage a connection with the spine. I use the word 'seat' to refer to the posterior when I am directing students. In addition as with any exercise there is risk to injury. A strict focus on form must be adhered to to avoid injury, and every care will be taken that new exercises will be taught with care and proper form. Students should have a clear open space, as well as a soft - but firm surface such as a mat on a hard floor or a thin carpet. We may use props that are easily found around the house (a roll of toilet paper, a large book, etc).
Supply List
We may use props, but many can be found around the house. The student will need a clear open space, and a soft but firm surface - like a mat on hard floor, or thin carpet. A water bottle is recommended.

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have taught ballet to learners as young as 5 and as old as 90 - online and off. There are risks of injury in any physical activity, and we take many precautions to maintain the safest learning environment to practice new movements. However parental guidance is suggested if there are any concerns.
