US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Welcome to Pig Journals, a small class experience. In this 5-day, 1-week summer camp we will learn to journal with our favorite Pig! We will work on basic sentence structure, and description and also practice writing our own 2-5 sentence journal entry each day. In each class, we will also read Pig's journal entry for the day out loud and talk about the activities that Pig did. We will work on basic sentence structure and develop simple description, as our camp progresses. We will play games and talk about our daily activities with our friends. After class, each learner will write a 2-5 sentence journal entry in their own writing book and also draw a picture to go with it. Your learner's journal entry can be uploaded to the classroom before the next class and I can screen share everyone's work. Our learners can also read their journal entries out loud to their fellow learners and share. If your learner is shy and does not want to share, that is totally fine too. In each class, we will play a game that builds on the skills that we worked on that day. All learners in this class should know their ABCs. If your learner is more advanced that is great as they can work on more complex sentences in their journal. Day 1 - Welcome to our class - Read Pig's journal - Simple sentence structure - Interactive game focused on simple sentences - End of class game Day 2 - Read Pig's journal - Discuss Pig's journal entry - Share our journal entries and read them out loud - Basic description - Interactive game focused on description - End of class game Day 3 - Read Pig's journal - Discuss Pig's journal entry - Share our journal entries and read them out loud - Short vowels - Interactive game focused on short vowels - End of class game Day 4 - Read Pig's journal - Discuss Pig's journal entry - Share our journal entries and read them out loud - Long vowels and the bossy "e" rule - Interactive game focused on long vowels - End of class game Day 5 - Final day of Pig Journals Summer Camp! - Read Pig's journal - Discuss Pig's journal entry - Share our journal entries and read them out loud - Interactive game focused on short and long vowels - End of class game - Personalized certificate of completion uploaded to the classroom at the end of class This class is interactive and uses the Nearpod app to deliver the lesson and allow our learners to interact with the screen. The Nearpod app can be downloaded prior to class or you can click the web link that will be provided to view it on a browser. To maximize the story screen it is great if your learner can zoom in with a separate device, but it is not necessary. The screen can usually be tiled to see both students and Nearpod (depending on your device capability). Learners should be aware of how to use their touch screen, mouse, or trackpad. The Nearpod file share code for our lesson will be in our Outschool classroom 30 minutes prior to class and again offered in the zoom class chatbox once class begins if you require assistance with setting it up. You can run Nearpod on a separate device but link through the OS classroom or run it in zoom tiling it with our class. It is all personal preference. I encourage you to link to the story prior to the class time if you are able as this will get our class moving much faster. The age for this group is 4-7 but I do have the flexible age option as I encourage all learners who want to adventure with Pig to join in on the fun. However, you as the parent are the best one to decide if this fits in their learning journey. Classes are designed with the general learner in mind so if your child is more advance or below/above the age frame please keep this in mind. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns prior to class. I do try to check my email consistently throughout the day Monday to Friday but I am usually unable to 10 mins prior to class as I am prepping for our learner's arrival.
Learning Goals
Learners will learn basic sentence structure and description which they will practice by writing 4 journal entries. We will also practice reading Pigs' journal entries as well as our own.
Other Details
Parental Guidance
If your learner is shy or reluctant to read their journal entry aloud that is absolutely okay. I do my best to work within each learner's comfort zone.
Supply List
A journal or pages of paper stapled together to make a booklet for each learner to write their journal entry after class time for the duration of the summer camp.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
All resources are created by myself and I own the sole Copywrite to The Adventures of Pig. Our class material will be shared via an app called Nearpod. This can be downloaded prior to class and by entering the code you access the lesson. if you choose to not download the Nearpod app the lesson can also be viewed using the link provided via a web browser. Both the code and link will be in the classroom a minimum of 30 minutes prior to class start. Each day there will be a new code for that day's lesson.
