45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
In this one-time class, each of my piano students is invited to share one or two pieces on the piano that they have been working on either in piano lessons or at home. Students will be asked to submit the titles of their pieces of music (along with some other basic information on a questionnaire) to me at least a week prior to the recital class so that an order of events can be created. Once an order of events has been created, a recital "program" will be sent to each student before the recital. Even though we can not be together in a single room to listen to each person, I would like to encourage students to dress nicely as if they were attending a piano recital and playing for an audience in person. Performing students are encouraged to bow or curtsy at the end of their performance. Students in the audience are encouraged to clap after every performance. Many students are shy about performing in front of other students, but I would like to give everyone the opportunity to share their talents. No matter how long a student has been taking lessons, they are invited to share. Playing in front of other students helps to build confidence and poise in front of an audience. It is expected that both of the pieces of music each student is playing have been practiced and rehearsed at home prior to the recital. Students will be given the opportunity to work on their chosen pieces in their lessons prior to the recital. Once a student has decided on the song (or songs) that they would like to play, they are encouraged to send the titles to me. In order to avoid any comparison of playing skills from other students, each song will hopefully only be allowed to be played once during the recital. As students turn in their titles, I will create a list of songs so that I can let students know if they need to choose another song because their first choice has already been chosen. Even though I had to set an age range of no more than 5 years for this listing, all ages are welcomed to enroll and perform for this event. We will hopefully be able to stay within the time limits of the class; however, each student will have plenty of time to play their music without feeling rushed.
Learning Goals
Students will take specific interest in one or two pieces of music in order to get them "performance ready". They will learn performance skills and manners, as well as correct audience behavior. This event is specifically created to give students an opportunity to share their chosen music with others, as well as listen to others in a performance setting.

Teacher expertise and credentials
North Carolina Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Hello! My name is Karen. I live in the Piedmont of North Carolina, and graduated from Appalachian State University with a Bachelor of Music Education degree. My concentration of instruments in college were voice and piano. I am also certified in the areas of Reading and English As A Second Language. I am a retired teacher with many years of experience teaching children from the ages of 5 years old through high school. I also have a mastery of the clarinet, guitar, and recorder. Presently, I teach private piano lessons in my home and have done so for many years. I have been teaching piano online for more than 4 years. I have four grandchildren and I love spending time with them, doing crafts, playing games, and helping them to grow and mature. Aside from spending time with family, I have a lot of hobbies that I enjoy, such as fishing, reading, sewing, and crafting.
I believe that it is important for every child to feel confident in their accomplishments! With that in mind, I gear my classes toward an environment of encouragement and positive reinforcement. Through teaching, question and answer, conversation, games, and interactive activities, I give students opportunities to shine while learning new skills. While in my class, they will have new experiences in a loving, calm, and nurturing environment! I look forward to meeting your child in my class as we have fun learning!
