This Piano Princess class is intended for beginner pianists ages 5-10 and focuses on four of the strongest, kindest, and coolest princesses: Elsa, Rapunzel, Moana, and Tiana! (Movies: Frozen, Tangled, Moana, and The Princess and the Frog.) In this class, students will learn the following: -Piano note names -Piano finger numbers -Four songs: -Let It Go (Elsa/Frozen) -How Far I'll Go (Moana) -I See the Light (Rapunzel/Tangled) -Almost There (Tiana/The Princess and the Frog) Class Structure: This course will use the following forms of communication: 1. Handouts: Detailed handouts will be provided for each song. This includes hand positions, finger numbers, and the song written out in finger numbers. The basic version will be covered in class, with an optional Level 2 version provided for an extra challenge. 2. Video Recordings: Each week, a step-by-step video tutorial will be uploaded for learning each song based on the handout. Students will watch this video while at a piano and play along with the recording, as well as pause at the instructed times in order to practice each line in a systematic way. 3. Student Video Uploads: If multiple learners are enrolled, learners have the option to be assigned one of more lines of the song to record and attach to a class discussion post. Ms. Julia will combine the submitted videos each week to form a complete song with all students participating. 4. Class Discussion Post: Each week, learners will answer to the following question about that week's princess: "What makes [Elsa/Rapunzel/Moana/Tiana] a great princess? What can you do to be more like her in your own life?" At the end of the course, students will answer the following discussion question: "In what ways did you become more princess-like throughout this course? 5. Private Messaging: Learners and their adults will be able to message Ms. Julia to obtain help or feedback and receive a response within 24 hours. 6. Office Hours: Each student has the option to receive one 30-minute private lesson via a live meeting with Ms. Julia, a NYC-based piano pedagogue and classical concert pianist. It is recommended that this office hour take place during week 5 of the course (see Course Schedule below), but adults may also choose to schedule it earlier in the course. Parental Involvement: Adult help is recommended for young learners, depending on their prior piano experience and learning style. Teaching Style: My teaching style is patient, warm, and enthusiastic. I want students to love piano as much as I do! Required Knowledge/Experience: Students must know the difference between their right hand and left hand. Music will be color coded (right hand is red, left hand is blue), so students who are uncertain of right vs. left hand may wish to use a marker or sticker to differentiate the hands. No musical knowledge is required. Please feel free to message me with any questions about the level/knowledge required for this course. Course Schedule: Week 1: Elsa -Learn piano note names -Learn piano finger numbers -Learn "Let It Go" from Frozen -Answer discussion question about Elsa -Upload video playing assigned section of "Let It Go" Week 2: Moana -Learn "How Far I'll Go" -Answer discussion question about Moana -Upload video playing assigned section of "How Far I'll Go" Week 3: Rapunzel -Learn "I See the Light" from Tangled -Answer discussion question about Rapunzel -Upload video playing assigned section of "I See the Light" Week 4: Tiana -Learn "Almost There" -Answer discussion question about Tiana -Upload video playing assigned section of "Almost There" Week 5: Level 2 and Private Lesson -Learn how to read Level 2 version of the songs -Schedule an office hour with Ms. Julia in order to receive individualized help (this will be coordinated via private messaging to find a mutually convenient time) -Answer end-of-course discussion question
