Class Experience

In this class, we will learn what makes scary music so scary, including:

🎃Morose Minors
🎃Creepy Chords
🎃Spooky Scales
🎃Revolting Rhythms
🎃Terrifying Trills
🎃Distressing Dissonance
🎃Horrid Harmony
🎃Appalling Articulation
🎃Eerie Intervals
🎃Repulsive Registers
🎃Maleficent Meters

and more to create our own scary music on the piano.

In the process, we will learn about the foundational elements of music, and how we can use them to create our own strange structures in music through eerie improvisation and creepy composition.

The instructor will demonstrate these elements to the class, and then they will have time to practice each technique while the instructor gives some individual feedback. Then we will finish the meeting with a monstrous group improv in which the learners will practice important musical collaborative skills.

Other Details

Supply List
Learners will need to be seated at a piano keyboard, digital piano, or acoustic piano during the class. Mini-keyboards are NOT recommended - a keyboard with at least 60 keys is a good guideline.

If you have an acoustic piano that has not been tuned in a while, it would be helpful to have it tuned before class begins.

It is helpful if the instructor can see both the student and their fingers on the keys, but it is more important that the learner has an unimpeded view of the instructor on the screen, is able to read the materials being shared, and can easily reach their keyboards without looking away from the screen.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Learning piano was always a struggle for me growing up. When I began to teach piano lessons 30+ years ago, I brought with me a commitment to observe and listen to my students to find better ways of learning. As I did so, I discovered the creativity and multi-sensory techniques that were missing from the way I was taught, and - thousands of students later - I am still learning and growing in my own teaching.
