Class Experience

This course consists of 6 "traditional style" piano lessons based on downloadable piano music. Learners will focus on using note names as they play more challenging music. Learners will be presented with visuals of the songs as well as a keyboard visual to facilitate understanding throughout class. During each class, learners will review previous music terms and songs, sight read a short musical example, learn new songs and skills, and demonstrate good piano playing technique.

Music theory will include note names, F major scale, G Major scale (review), C Major scale (review), triple meter, crescendo, forte, mezzo piano, slurs, ties, andante, allegro, staccato, accent, and ritardando.

Learners should practice between classes to improve their skills and to prepare for class. A private link will be provided for learners to view the teacher's videos of the songs and to access music with notations.

Because the music is more difficult, songs may be played over several weeks. Listed below are the songs that will introduced each week:

Week 1 - "Aiken Drum"
Week 2 - "Spring"
Week 3 - "Prince of Denmark"
Week 4 - "Git Along Little Doggies"
Week 5 - "Dance"
Week 6 - Review game and learners play a final performance for class

Additional songs will be added as needed.

While it is not required, individual playing will be optional throughout this course. Learners may also use their learner tab to upload a video of themselves playing for individualized feedback.

Texas Teaching Certificate in Music/Theater/Arts
Hello! My name is Mrs. McArthur and I teach MUSIC! I am a Texas certified all-level music teacher with 29 years of teaching experience, 26 years in public schools and 3 years online and homeschool experience. I have taught preschool through eighth grade General Music and Choir classes. I received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in vocal music from Oklahoma Baptist University.

I believe that every learner can make music! Learners need a variety of experiences to learn music skills, including visual, aural and kinesthetic. Given sequential steps, students can achieve well beyond the expectations. When creativity is modeled, learners discover that making mistakes improves music. Learners need opportunities to be creative with choices so they can create on their own terms and interests. By making connections to science, social studies, math and beyond, students learn that subjects don’t exist in isolation. Music is the universal language and learners deserve a chance to explore the world through a musical lens!
