Class Experience

Intermediate - Advanced Level
***Please note: learners are not to eat during their lessons.***

Welcome to my online, private and individualized, piano lessons! My name is Ms. Katie. I'm a seventh-generation Beethoven, classically trained pianist, and I'm looking forward to walking through this journey with you!

For our first class, we'll get to meet each other, talk about your music background, and discuss any specific music goals you may have. During this time, I'll gauge which book in the Alfred series would be the best fit for you based on several factors including age and musical experience. But no worries! If you don't have any music already, I'll have some we can start with in our very first lesson!

Basic lesson can include:
Alfred's Series
Classical Repertoire
Sacred
Sheet music additions

As we continue through our lessons, we'll work on many facets of music in general - not just piano! This includes music reading, music theory, interpretation, communication, and expression, as well as methods specific to the piano such as technique, articulation, and relaxation. Don't forget the scales, arpeggios, and cadences! We'll learn those, too.

All students must have a functioning, full-sized piano and maintain it in good condition. Also, students need a stable internet connection and use a device with proper sound and a functioning camera. The device must be set up in such a way that the teacher can see the learner’s hands while they are playing as well as hear what is being played. Please note that lessons will not continue if these standards are not met.

Good focus is vital for profitable music lessons. Therefore students must take their lessons in a location free from background noise and distractions. Lessons may be suspended if the student’s environment is noisy or distracting.

Please send me any questions or schedule requests you may have!
~Ms. Katie

Parental Guidance
~ Please note that allowing your learner to eat during class will greatly restrict their ability to focus on the lesson and be engaged with the teacher. Please prohibit your learner from eating during class.
Pre-Requisites
This 45 minute class is geared for intermediate and advanced piano students. Beginning students are encouraged to enroll in my 25 minute piano lessons.
Supply List
~ Learners will need a full-sized (88-key) acoustic piano or electric keyboard with weighted keys. If the learner is using an acoustic piano, it needs to be maintained to reasonable standards such as proper tuning and functioning keys and pedals.
~ A pencil with eraser is always handy!
~ After the first lesson, learners will be guided to which piano lesson books to purchase.
~ Periodically, learners will be assigned special pieces that they'll need to print out.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
~ Learners will be using the Alfred piano series with occasional pieces from the Wendy Stevens library. ~ Alfred has several series that are specific to the age of the learner. These include "Alfred's Basic Prep Course for the Younger Beginner," "Alfred's Basic Piano Library," and "Alfred's Basic Piano Library for the Later Beginner." Some of these are an "All-In-One" book that contain lesson and theory together. Others have them as separate books. ~ In addition, Alfred offers options such as "Technique," "Notespeller," and "Recital" piano books that offer a little fun and variation to your learner's practice time. ~ A scales/arpeggios/cadences book may also be required.
