1-2 hours per week. Students will be expected to practice 4-5 days between each lesson. Beginners are expected to practice for 15-20 minutes per day, intermediate students may be expected to practice up to 30-40 minutes per day, and advanced students may be expected to practice 40-60 minutes per day.Assessment
Student progress will be assessed at the beginning of each subsequent lesson, and occasional online performance opportunities will be available for students to showcase their competency on the instrument.Class Experience
This flexible, one-on-one class structure is designed for beginner, intermediate, and advanced piano students ages 15-18. This class will teach concepts including, but not limited to, navigating the keyboard, rhythmic fluency, note identification, musical symbols, and musicianship. Students will develop these skills while playing music specifically selected for their learning level. While mastering these music-specific concepts, students will be developing general skills including active listening, critical thinking, fine-motor skills, and self-discipline. Since this is a one-on-one class, the lessons will be tailored to each individual student's learning style, in a relaxed, fun teaching environment. The number of pieces, and the pace at which we work on them, will be determined by what is best for the individual student. No prior knowledge of the instrument is required, but regular practice on a keyboard or piano in the student's home is necessary between each weekly lesson. This class begins in mid-October and roughly follows a typical academic calendar, concluding in mid-December. Designed for both new and returning students, new students are not required to have completed Fall Term A. Students will have the option to perform in a recital sometime in mid-December. Week 1: Assess student; assign first piece(s) Week 2: Review first piece(s); introduce technical warm-ups (ex. scales, arpeggios) Week 3: Begin with technical warm-ups; review first piece(s), fix any note/rhythm issues Week 4: Technical warm-ups; mid-session assessment of current repertoire, focusing on technique and musicality Week 5: Technical warm-ups; assign new piece(s) for second half of term Week 6: Technical warm-ups, review pieces from previous week, fixing any note/rhythm issues Week 7: Technical warm-ups; review pieces from previous week, focusing on technique and musicality Week 8: Technical warm-up review and assessment; end of session assessment of all repertoire during "mini-recital"
Learning Goals
Students will learn rhythm, note identification, musical symbols, musicianship, and how to navigate the keyboard.
