Betsy Kelberlau
In this ongoing, weekly course, students will learn the basics of playing piano in a fun way!
Class experience
Basic piano technique and music reading will be taught. We will cover naming the keys of the piano, how to play the keys on the piano, the music alphabet, dynamics, note values for: quarter note, half note, dotted half note, whole notes. We will focus on matching the letter name with the piano keys first, before identifying and reading notes on the staff. Week 1: Ice Breaker- getting to know you game- Introduction to the Piano. identify the black keys and white keys of the piano. We'll work...
Students will learn basic playing technique of how to play the piano. Students will identify the sets of 2 and sets of 3 black keys and the white keys on the piano. Students will identify and apply dynamics (softs and louds of music). Students will identify and apply rhythms and note values for quarter note, half note, dotted half note, and whole note. Students will show what they know by creating their own compositions, given note and rhythm guides.
Music will be sent in PDF files. Learners are required to print and/or download this onto their device so they may access it for practice during the week. If printing, it is highly recommended that the pages be placed in a 3 ring binder. However, this is optional, as long as the learner can read it on the screen. Learners need a spiral notebook and pencil for reminders and note taking during class. If using a device during class, versus printed out materials, please place the device so it's in front, while the learner is playing. This way, the learner can keep eyes on both the music and piano keys, while playing. If a family would choose to use a hard copy book, vs printing out materials, I also use Piano Adventures. A link for purchase of this book will be provided upon enrollment.
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
Learners will be using music from the Cascade Method Note Match and Cascade Method Beginner Piano Book by Tara Boykin.
