Homework
1 hour per week. Students should practice their piano pieces for 15 minutes 3-4 times weekly and finish any worksheets I may assign. Usually, students work on one to two pieces of music a week unless the student requests more. The number of piano pieces depends on the student's abilities and how they like to work. More advanced students may require longer practice times as there will be more material to practice and work through.Assessment
In each lesson, the student is introduced to new material and concepts, which they practice during the week, returning the following week to demonstrate what they've learned during their practice and work on any suggested changes.Grading
There are no grades given for private piano lessons. However, students may prepare for the exams of The Royal Conservatory of Music and receive a certificate from the RCM when their level is completed. This option should be discussed when starting exams. I encourage parents and students to contact me with any questions they may have about the RCM certificate program.Class Experience
US Grade 2 - 5
Beginner - Intermediate Level
Piano for Beginners "Understanding the Piano" is a series of 1-on-1 Ongoing Piano Lessons, where we work on learning to play the piano and developing skills in piano technique, sight reading, and ear training by working through a progressing set of pieces and exercises. In each lesson, the student is introduced to new material and concepts, which they practice during the week and return the following week to demonstrate and discuss what they've learned during their weekly practice and work on any suggested changes. After completing this first piano book, students can progress through additional grades if desired. More advanced students may even be able to prepare for The Royal Conservatory of Music exams if they want. Students with previous piano experience should contact me before enrolling to ensure we have materials appropriate for their skill level and continuing studies. Lessons are structured around the individual student in a relaxed, fun, flexible, engaging, patient, and encouraging way, focusing on their interests and strengths to help them develop piano proficiency while feeling happy and proud of their accomplishments. Each student receives a virtual student binder in a PDF format as a record of the student's homework and assignments throughout their studies. An updated PDF of the student's binder gets sent after each lesson by the close of the day. Because these lessons are for beginners, no experience is required other than a desire to play the piano and learn music concepts. Parents may need to assist younger children during their weekly practice depending on their child's age and abilities.
Learning Goals
Students will learn to play piano pieces of increasing difficulty as we work through a piano repertoire book. In addition, students will learn basic music theory, such as the notes of the treble and bass clefs, along with simple music symbols. Students will learn to play some simple scales in addition to working on beginner exercises in sight reading and ear training. 1-on-1 piano lessons are progressive, starting with beginner-level material and advancing with the student according to their age, abilities, and time spent practicing and learning the materials presented in lessons. If students wish to continue lessons after completing the first piano book, they can continue working through additional grade levels that build upon the previous material. More advanced students may be able to prepare for the practical and theoretical exams of The Royal Conservatory of Music if they so desire. I'm happy to answer questions regarding ongoing piano lessons.
