Class Experience

Pianists will continue their piano journey with an age appropriate piano course geared at building the foundation of musical learning. This course is designed for many types of learners who need oral, visual and kinesthetic tools to motivate and inspire them to make music. Pianists will practice habits, conversation, patience, and leadership skills, as well as learning the basics of music.
Please see my complete Teacher Profile for my experience. In short, I have been teaching music for 20+ years and have a Masters in Music Degree from the Manhattan School of Music.
Pianists are encouraged to practice at least 5-10 minutes (or more!) as many days a week as is possible. Progress can be made when pianists practice consistently rather than trying to cram musical learning immediately before the lesson. Pianists may need parents to read over the lesson plans or replay the class video for reenforcement throughout the week.
 1 file available upon enrollment
Required: Piano (Any keyboard with at around 60 keys will be sufficient.) An inexpensive electric keyboard can run between $50-200 at least. Required: Faber Pre-Reading Piano Adventure Lesson Book A Recommended: Audio Tracks Recommended: Music Stand Please make sure the pianist can see the Lesson Book clearly. PDF Printout of Homework Helper & Class Notes (PDF available on enrollment.) Pencil
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Informal assessment occurs when pianists play back the musical examples and songs in class. (I will also accept any recordings the pianist makes at home. Each class will have time for every pianist to play while everyone else is muted, unless they choose not to. If pianists choose not to play unmuted, then assessment may not be fully accurate.
This class is not performance based.
55 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Please note that this class may be rescheduled or cancelled if the minimum enrolled hasn’t been met. Thank you for your understanding.

For pianists under 6, parental guidance may be needed for technical issues, help with the lessons and safety. Early pianists are not expected to sit at the piano the whole time, but I hope they can stay in the room for the lesson with encouragement from caregivers.
I encourage parents to model what I do in the lesson rather than manipulate the pianists hands.
Virtual music making has its limitations and patience and understanding are appreciated.

Please understand that the Mute Function will be used throughout the class. Making music live over the internet has a few issues to consider and one of them is the Zoom "noise cancelling" algorithm. Another issue is the internet lag which makes playing at the same time impossible. Therefore the pianists will be muted while I play musical examples, then we unmute to discuss and ask questions. I will also ask for volunteers to play unmuted one at a time, during which is either a listening moment or a practice moment for the other pianists. There will be opportunities for conversation and interaction in every lesson. Please make sure your learner is familiar with muting and unmuting.

- Please set up the computer to have Original Sound Enabled. Check out this link for help doing that:

- Please position the computer camera to include part of the piano and student, if possible. This may mean putting the laptop off to the side of the pianist, rather than in front. If this is too cumbersome, it's not the end of the world. Computers, laptops and iPads are ideal, but iPhones can be used.

- Please make sure the pianist has a quiet space to learn in. Because we are using our ears a lot, it can be difficult for pianists to concentrate if there is a lot of background noise or distractions. Headphones are recommended for loud environments.
Required: Faber Pre-Reading Piano Adventure Lesson Book A

Highly Recommended: Audio Tracks

Recommended: Piano Adventures Player App
