Class Experience

US Grade 6 - 8
This 4-day class will teach the concepts of Physics including speed, velocity, acceleration, free-fall, gravity and weight. We will watch video clips from the movies The Incredibles, Space Jam and Cars, analyze the motion and use equations to calculate the Physics.
Day 1: Speed and Velocity will be taught on day 1. We will discuss what it means to be in motion, that speed is a rate and go over the equation for speed and velocity. Clips from the movie The Incredibles will be shown, and students will work through a variety of practice problems related to the video clips.
Day 2: Acceleration will be taught on day 2. We will discuss the three ways an object can accelerate and go over the equation for acceleration. We will watch video clips from the movie Cars and work through practice problems related to the video clips.
Day 3: Force and mass will be taught on day 3. We will discuss what a force is, learn about Newton's 2nd law of motion and go over the equation for force. We will watch video clips from the movie Space Jam and work through practice problems related to the video clips.
Day 4- Free fall, gravity and weight will be taught on day 4. We will discuss that all objects accelerate at the same rate in free fall and determine the difference between weight and mass. We will watch more video clips from the 3 movies mentioned above and work through more practice problems.

Having prior experience or knowledge in solving basic one or 2 step equations will be helpful. We will work through the solving of the equations together if your child needs additional help. Students will have opportunities to discuss with other students the concepts and how it relates to their lives.
Learning Goals
Students will learn and calculate the Physics concepts of speed, velocity, acceleration, force, free fall and weight.
