A memory card and battery for the camera are items required. Also, a way to transfer the pictures from the memory card to a device is recommended, so I can see how well the learner is understanding the material. 💫 A digital DSLR is needed for this class and you're welcome to buy, borrow, or rent one from various photography equipment sites. However, a camera on a phone would work as well. There may not be as many options as we discuss in this course, but it could still work. There is an app called Lightroom Mobile app that has some of the same settings as a digital DSLR and could also be functional for this class. ➡️ Additional photography handouts and self-guided lessons are available at my TpT store- https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Cameragenius

Syllabus
12 Lessons
over 4 WeeksLesson 1:
History- An overview of the history of photography and cameras from 1800.
My lesson is about the history of photography from the 1800's to present day. We learn about where the first pictures came from and what it looks like, what the first few cameras were and how they worked, along with watching video clips about the development of film photography. We will learn about photographer historical figures like Niepsce, Deguerre, and Talbot. Homework will be assigned to find the oldest picture in your home and to take a few fun pictures to share with the class next time.
50 mins online live lesson
Lesson 2:
Evolution of Camera-Explore cameras throughout 1950-present day.
My lesson is about the cameras from 1950-present day. We look at cameras such as box cameras, point and shoots, bridge cameras, DSLR's and Mirrorless cameras. We discuss our own cameras and explore how the settings are utilized. We use our cameras by trying our manual focus modes vs. auto focus. This is a fun class where we connect history with our present day love for photography! Homework will be assigned to take a few pictures with manual focus and auto focus to master the skill of focus.

Lesson 3:
Subject and Framing- How to create a good photograph? 3 Steps to a good subject
My lesson is about creating a good subject and framing the subject well. Using these 3 steps, the learner sees how to create a good subject and show off in his or her photography skills! This is a step by step guide to 'seeing' a good photograph and 'knowing' how to create one! This class is essential to creating a great image. The basics of photography are covered when framing is discussed as well. Homework will be assigned to use the steps and framing to create images and upload to the class.

Lesson 4:
Composition #1 - How to use Rule of Thirds, Symmetry, and Leading Lines.
My lesson is about creating awe-inducing composition in your photos by using these three rules, rule of thirds, symmetry and leading lines. We will have a presentation and videos about each type of composition and then in-class photo assignments using each one. The learners will then show their photos in class by just turning their cameras around in the zoom video. Then there will be homework assigned using the same techniques and then upload the images to the classroom for next class.

Learning Needs
I have experience working with students with special needs and am willing to help!
Parental Guidance
I am utilizing a presentation through screen share only, to create my presentations for class. I am also using YouTube videos that either I created or that already exist on the platform. I also don't show the whole video and just pick out sections that support my teaching.
Also the Lightroom Mobile App is a phone camera app that is a camera as well as an editing tool. I recommend the camera app because it offers shutter speed, exposure, white balance, and ISO options. The app currently has a 7 day free trial, then it's $4.99 a month. If you do not want to use this app, feel free to find another one with the options listed is possible. It is highly recommended but not required.
Supply List
CAMERA: A digital DSLR camera is highly recommended, however, a camera from a smart phone will also work. Our classes will have photo taking assignments. LIGHTROOM MOBILE APP: (only for phone cameras) This app is highly recommended as we will be learning settings in our Digital DSLR and they also have most of those settings in this app that your student can use so he or she will still be learning along with us. It is $4.99 monthly after a 7 day free trial. See the link under materials. BINDER OR FOLDER: Also there will be notes with fill-in-the-blank areas that your student may find really helpful for class. I recommend printing them and putting them in a folder or binder to support learning.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Florida Teaching Certificate in Elementary Education
Bachelor's Degree from Bethel University (College), Mishawaka, IN
Hello & Welcome! My name is Alyssa Chirch and I am your learner's Photography teacher!
WHAT I TEACH
During the school year, I offer full curriculum courses in photography for middle school and high school students, and 1:1 tutoring for photography. I teach in the evenings during the school year and have daytime or evening camps, groups, and tutoring in the summer. Grades can be given for full curriculum courses as requested.
MY BACKGROUND AND EDUCATION
Currently, I am a family photographer in South Florida and I teach 4th grade at a Christian school.
I love photography, have a family photography business, and have been teaching photography on Outschool since 2019. I have taught virtually or in-person for over 12 years in various subjects. In that time, I have taught English, Spelling, Reading, Physical Education, Praise Dance, Ballet, and Bible. I have a Bachelor of Arts degree in Bible & Ministry from Bethel College in Mishawaka, IN. I also have my temporary teacher certificate in the state of Florida for elementary education and am working toward my permanent licensure.
I have worked in the social work field with people with disabilities, as an employment specialist, and as a foster parent recruiter. These experiences have prepared me to work with all levels and abilities as well as helped me develop patience and compassion for my students so they feel safe and encouraged in my classes.
WHY & HOW I TEACH
My philosophy behind teaching is that I want every student to feel welcome and open to share in my classes. I want to create a place where the students feel comfortable interacting with each other as well as with me. I think it’s really great when the students help each other in class as well. I am very interactive and ask for feedback from my students to support their learning. This feedback can be verbal responses to questions about learning, sharing their photos and answering questions about them, or sharing what they like about certain concepts discussed in class. I also give positive encouragement and constructive criticism to help them in the learning process.
A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ME
In my spare time, I enjoy traveling with my family to experience new places. Most recently we have been exploring South Florida, since we moved here from small-town Indiana in 2019. My husband and I have 5 kids, 3 are grown and 2 are still at home. I have kids with special needs, as well, which continues to prepares me to work with all sorts of learners. I love to draw and paint as a hobby and play with our 2 beloved cats, Felix & Marie (Disney names, if you know-you know). Fun fact about me, I love to exercise and explore health-related concepts to stay in good health.
