Class Experience

The focus of this lesson is to support and promote early critical thinking skills in a fun and enjoyable way. Students will be taught to observe and name the details in the photo. Once we have observed the details students will describe what they see. Finally, they will draw conclusions and infer what might be happening in the photo.

By teaching and encouraging these early thinking skills, and by promoting questions that encourage the students to think about the photos and the questions, students develop skills that are important both for critical thinking and also for early reading and writing.

These Photo of the Day classes support many of the Common Core English skills taught in the classroom as students 'read' the photos and explain what they see and what they think might be happening in the picture. Students will participate in collaborative conversations with their peers and will encouraged to share their observations, and take turns as the listen to the ideas of others. They will be encouraged as they share ideas and build upon the ideas of their classmates, to understand the 'story' in the picture. They will be supported and encouraged as they practice these important skills.
No homework will be assigned, however if students would like to share photos in the classroom and share their thoughts about them, I would be very happy to see their ideas.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
1 hour 15 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
