US Grade 3 - 6
Beginner Level
This ongoing class for struggling readers, especially those with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ASD, and ADHD, uses a blend of successful literacy building strategies to strengthen reading, writing, and spelling skills. The class uses a range of fiction and non-fiction text types with topics and themes that interest learners in the 8 - 11 age bracket. Students can expect to engage in a range of phonics knowledge building, vocabulary building, spelling, reading, comprehension, and writing based activities in each class. The semi-private teaching and reading tutor set up not only makes this class more affordable for more families, but also allows students to develop confidence reading in front of their peers. Through repetition, students engage in multiple ways of reading such as mirror reading, jump in reading, and work on reading with expression. Multi-sensory Orton Gillingham style approaches engage learners, especially those with ADHD, and help students to develop new valuable neural pathways connected to literacy. Ms. Allie is a fully qualified and experienced teacher of English, Literacy, and English as a Second Language. She has been teaching for 15 years. She has considerable experience with neurodiverse students and those with SLD’s in reading and writing (Dyslexia). The teaching style of this class combines elements of several research and evidence based approaches to the teaching of literacy. Recommended Materials: It is highly recommended that students have a mini white board and some white board markers. Class requirements: This class works best for students whose reading level is equivalent to grade 1-2 of primary/elementary school, and who have a basic understanding of phonics, including the sounds: f, l, m, n, r, s, v, ve, z, sh, th, ng, nk, b, c, k, ck, d, g, h, j, g, p, qu, t, wh, x, y, ch, a, e, i, o, u. This class does not teach letters, sounds, or reading from scratch. It is assumed students have knowledge of the alphabet and basic phonics. Progress: This class runs on an ongoing basis with the content repeating every 10-15 weeks, depending on student need. You may join at any time. Content: 1.
