US Grade Kindergarten - 1
Welcome to the third class in my Phonics and Math Explorers series! This course is designed to help learners expand their beginning phonics skills as we learn to blend, segment, and decode CVCe words and words with common vowel teams focusing on long vowel sounds. As part of the phonics portion of class, learners will be explicitly taught how to read two target sight words each week. Our target sight words will be used, along with CVCe words, to build decodable sentences that learners can read independently! Each week learners will also have instruction in math lessons designed to improve their number sense and addition/subtraction skills. The lessons in this course are interactive and designed to reach all learners whether they learn best through auditory, visual, or kinesthetic means. I believe that learning should be fun! The classes will include rhymes, games, songs, and movement activities to keep your learner engaged. ======================= Day 1 ======================= -Welcome Song -Phonics Warm Up: Oral practice of phonemic awareness skills. (This practice will include things such as identifying rhyming words, counting the number of words we hear in a sentence, identifying the first/middle/last sounds we hear in a word, and adding/deleting/substituting sounds to make new words.) -The target vowel sound of the week will be introduced. Learners will practice blending CVCe words that use the target long vowel sound. This portion of class follows the I do, We do, You do method to scaffold learning as we practice blending sounds to read. Math: Learners will participate in a game/discussion or other math activity that is designed to help them develop and practice their number sense skills. -The target math skill of the week will be introduced. The remainder of class will be used to scaffold learning and practice of the target skill using the I do, We do, You do method. ======================= Day 2 ======================= -Welcome Song -Warm Up: Oral practice of phonemic awareness skills -Review: Learners will review the target long vowel sound of the week and practice blending words that use the target long vowel sound. -Extend: During this portion of class we will move from reading single CVCe words to looking at how they are used in context. Our two sight words of the week will be introduced and used to build simple sentences in a decodable text. -Math: Learners will participate in a game/discussion or other math activity that is designed to help them develop and practice their number sense skills. -Learners will practice the target math skill of the week that was introduced on day 1. ======================= Muting During Class ======================= Please make sure that your learner knows how to mute/unmute themselves prior to class. I prefer to keep all learners unmuted to add an interactive element to class. However there may be times that learners may be muted during class to minimize background noise and facilitate direct instruction. **********Weekly Schedule********** ***July*** Week of July 21st: Vowel team ee/Counting by 5s and counting with tally marks Week of July 28th: Vowel team ee review and practice ***August*** Week of August 4th: NO CLASS Week of August 11th: NO CLASS Week of August 18th: Vowel team igh/ Addition with numbers 1-20 using word problems Week of August 25th: Vowel team igh/ Addition with numbers 1-20 using word problems
