Class Experience

US Grade 2 - 3
Is your student struggling with reading? Are you unsure on how to help them move forward with their reading skills?
My approach for helping students progress and improve upon reading is through fun lessons using interactive games. The lessons I base my class on is the Explode the Code series of books. These books make learning to read fun.

This class students learn the beginning phonetic sounds of the alphabet including ar words, or words, er, ir, ur words, wor and war words, vowel plus r, igh words, oo words, ea words, ie words, second sound of digraphs and trigraphs, oi and oy words, ou and ow words, au and aw words, ew, ui, ue, and ou words, diphthongs. Students will complete reading, writing, and spelling activities. Students will be encouraged to have paper and pencil available to write down words with the sounds for the current lesson. In class the teacher will use screen sharing to show student activities covering the phonetic sound that we will do together in class, each student being given the opportunity to answer questions about the lesson.

Lessons are lined up as the following:

Week 1 Sept 1: Lesson 1: ar words; Lesson 2: or words
Week 2 Sept 7: Lesson 3: er, ir, ur words; Lesson 4: wor and war words
Week 3 Sept 14: Lesson 5: vowel plus r; Lesson 6: igh words
Week 4: Sept 21: Lesson 7: oo words; Lesson 8: ea words
Week 5 Sept 28: Lesson 9: ie words; Lesson 10: second sound of digraphs and trigraphs
Week 6 Oct 5: Lesson 11: oi and oy words; Lesson 12: ou and ow words
Week 7 Oct 15: Lesson 13: au and aw words; Lesson 14: ew, ui, ue and ou words
Week 8: Oct 25: Lesson 15: diphthongs

At the end of class we will have an interactive game time on one of three sites: nearpod; using the sounds learned in that class. It is recommended students have another device to play the game on but it is not required. Students can play on the same device they are in the zoom classroom in. Parents are encouraged to be prepared before class and be available to help their students with this portion of the class if needed. At the end of class a PDF worksheet will be provided in the outschool classroom, and a link and code to the game on nearpod to play after class is over independently.
