US Grade 2 - 3
Is your student struggling with reading? Are you unsure on how to help them move forward with their reading skills? My approach for helping students progress and improve upon reading is through fun lessons using interactive games. The lessons I base my class on is the Explode the Code series of books. These books make learning to read fun. This class students learn the beginning phonetic sounds of the alphabet including compound words, common endings ful, ing, est, ed, ness, syllable division between double consonants, syllable division between different consonants, syllable division, open and closed syllables, syllable division with open syllables, syllable division with closed syllables, syllable division with open syllables syllable division with closed syllables, syllable division with syllables ending in-y, syllable division with syllables ending in ie, vowel digraph syllables: ai, ay, ea, ee, oa, ow, syllable vision with three- syllable words. Students will complete reading, writing, and spelling activities. Students will be encouraged to have paper and pencil available to write down words with the sounds for the current lesson. In class the teacher will use screen sharing to show student activities covering the phonetic sound that we will do together in class, each student being given the opportunity to answer questions about the lesson. We will also use nearpod.com Lessons are lined up as the following: Week 1 March 3 2023: Lesson 1: compound words; Lesson 2: common ending; ful, ing, est, ed, ness Week 2 March 10 2023: Lesson 3: syllable division between double consonants; Lesson 4: syllable division between different consonants Week 3 March 17 2023 : Lesson 5: review lesson; Lesson 6: open and closed syllables Week 4 March 24 2023: Lesson 7: syllable division with open syllables; Lesson 8: syllable division with syllables ending in y Week 5 March 31 2023: Lesson 9: syllable division with syllables ending in ie; Lesson 10: vowel digraph syllable ai, ay, ea, ee, oa ow Week 6 April 7: Lesson 11: syllable division with three-syllable words; Lesson 12: syllable division with three-syllable words At the end of class we will have an interactive game time on one of three sites: nearpod; using the sounds learned in that class. It is recommended students have another device to play the game on but it is not required. Students can play on the same device they are in the zoom classroom in. Parents are encouraged to be prepared before class and be available to help their students with this portion of the class if needed. At the end of class a PDF worksheet will be provided in the outschool classroom, and a link and code to the game on nearpod to play after class is over independently.
Learning Goals
To learn the phonetic sounds of each of the letter combinations to help students with reading skills.
