Class Experience

In this absolute beginner's class, you will learn the phonic sounds of all letters of the alphabet in an order that will allow you to begin to read and write simple cvc words from the very first lesson. During the first five lessons, you will learn a total of four new sounds. The sixth lesson has six sounds, the reason being that these letters/sounds are seldom used in cvc words. You will learn each sound by watching an interactive presentation, repeating each sound, and relating that sound to the start of each picture you see. Using sheets provided to you, you will use your fingers to trace the letters that go with each sound and will create that letter using your own play-doh. After learning the four sounds, you will see familiar pictures we have used to learn the starting sound, and select the relevant sound that corresponds with that picture. You will soon begin to recognise that all words are made up of different sounds and that you can read them!

Learning Goals

Students will learn to read and write the phonic sounds of the 26 letters of the alphabet.

Parental Guidance
Your children may need help tracing the sounds and words on the sheets I provide. If you could ask them to say the sound out loud as they trace and write it, it will help embed their understanding. You can also help your child by asking them to tell you whenever they see the sounds of the day in written form as this will help them to understand that sounds blend together to make words. This could be in books you read with them, or in a newspaper, or on notices, in shops you visit (Covid allowing!) - there are signs everywhere that you could point out to help them. The park is a good place for signs - there may be 'keep off the grass' or 'please do not feed the ducks' signs. Words are all around us - if you can help your child see them, it will help them learn.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
I will provide you with sheets showing all the letters of the alphabet that will need to be printed out prior to class so that your learner can achieve the learning goal. Your child will also benefit from using play-doh to make the sounds as we learn them and can do so by using the sheets provided as a stencil. Alternatively, if you have sand you can place onto a tray, your child can use their fingers to write the letters/sounds. If you could kindly arrange the sheets into the following order for the relevant days, it will help your child during the lessons: lesson one: cmat lesson two: srip lesson three: bfog lesson four: hjul lesson five: dwen lesson six: kqvxyz
