Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 1
Each class will begin with reviewing the sh, ch, and th sounds. Learners will practice reading skills and writing words. For example, our focus skill for class one day may be the silent e rule. We will read words with and without the silent e and discuss the rule. Students will look at several words and find the ones that end with the silent e (such as cape, tape, cap, tap, bike, hike). Each child will have an opportunity to read a word individually. We will then practice writing 2-4 words. Please bring a white board or writing paper and pencil or markers to class.
We will then be word detectives and try to figure out our animals of the day. Sometimes the animals will follow our rule and sometimes they will not. We will use decoding skills to help us figure out what animal we will be learning about. For example, one class we may learn about the killer whale and chinchilla. Then we will practice reading sentences. Each child will get to read at least one sentence and I will give as much support as needed. Sentences may be facts about the animals or fictional stories. Example sentences may be: Chinchillas have the softest fur in the world. They live in the Andys Mountains. Chinchillas don't take a bath in water. They take dust bathes. I will give learners as much support as they need and sometimes we will echo read the sentences together.
I use slides and lots of real pictures and clip art too. When appropriate I may also include a very short video clip on the animal (less than 30 seconds.)
*Please bring a white board or paper to class each day as we will be writing some during each class.

I absolutely love teaching! In my class we have fun learning to read, write, and practice math skills. In addition to academic classes, I also enjoy teaching character building concepts such as perseverance, kindness, and self control. I have been a kindergarten teacher for the last 14 years and a preschool teacher for several years before earning my degree in Early Elementary and my Masters in Special Education from the University of Florida. I teach classes to help young learners build confidence, continue their curiosity of new skills and have fun learning. I love teaching children about animals and I have some fun guided reading classes where we also learn amazing animal facts. I have had training on best practices in teaching, growth mindset, character counts training, and have taken several reading endorsement classes. I use songs, silly stories, and chants to help learners learn new skills. I hope to foster a love of learning and help your child be the best they can be.

I started teaching on Outschool in 2020 and I have met the most wonderful learners these past few years. Along with teaching amazing learners on Outschool I also homeschool my son who has Down syndrome. I have also developed a reading and learning program for my son and other learners with intellectual disabilities. I have been tutoring young learners with Down syndrome with my program as well as teaching a class to a small group of learners with Ds at our local Down syndrome association once a week.

I am so excited to teach and encourage your learner! My goal is to make learning fun and give your learner the tools and practice they need to learn new skills. I love using a multi sensory approach to learning.
