Students will learn foundational phonics skills to build an understanding of the relationship between written letters and spoken sounds. This class is for learners who already have a solid understanding of all basic letter names and sounds.

Each class will focus on a specific phonics skill and students will be guided on how to begin and succeed during a given learning task related to that skill. There will be opportunities to practice each skill as a group through games, songs, and stories. Students will also be encouraged to demonstrate their understanding individually. The learning activities will allow students an opportunity to interact with one another while creating a supportive rapport.

This class is ideal for students looking to learn with their peers. Each student is welcome to articulate their ideas while also building strong listening skills. The interactive nature of the class will provide a compliment to a family's independent phonics workbook practice of choice. Each learner is expected to join the class from a quiet learning space in order to maintain the ability to focus. Headphones or earbuds can also help eliminate distractions. Due to the interactive nature of the learning activities, a laptop is strongly recommended. Students will be asked to manipulate the screen while learning.

My interactive teaching style facilitates a learning environment that encourages all students to work to their full potential. Positive reinforcement creates a supportive learning space where each student is motivated to see their classmates succeed. The small group setting allows me to understand the learning style of each student in order to provide the appropriate individualized instruction during each lesson.

I have over 15 years of teaching experience across various learning environments, such as public, private, independent, and virtual. Though I am currently a licensed educator, I stepped away from the public education system in order to homeschool my children. During this time I have shifted my perspective on effective teaching methods. In addition to teaching my 3 children, I enjoy offering individual and small group reading literacy instruction to elementary students. It is rewarding to see young learners thriving from reading literacy instruction designed to meet their individual needs. I feel most effective as a teacher when I can work with each family to create a plan of action that will facilitate confidence and guide a student on their path toward reading fluency.
