Designed for learners who have mastered letter identification, letter formation, and letter sounds, this one-time course will teach learners two strategies to read and spell CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words.

Class Experience

Do you have a young learner beginning to orally blend letter sounds together to read words? Or perhaps they need additional practice with short vowel sounds or spelling the sounds they hear? Then this class fits the bill!

The class is structured as follows:
1. Introduction of teacher and learners
2. Review of short vowel sounds
3. Review of consonant sounds
4. Learners are taught a strategy for reading CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words
5. Practice reading CVC words in a gradual release model (teacher models, class practices with the teacher, learner practices independently)
6. Learners are taught a strategy for spelling CVC words
7. Practice spelling CVC words in a gradual release model (teacher models, class practices with the teacher, learner practices independently)

There will be opportunities for learners to interact with the teacher; this will be through questioning and skill practice. My goal is to be sure all my learners feel comfortable and have fun, so if they are not ready to speak at any time, I will not put them on the spot. We are all ready at our own time! I keep this class small to ensure appropriate support and attention for each learner.

There will be movement breaks provided to get our minds ready for additional learning throughout the class. I will be using slides as visuals to teach the strategies and to support students. I will also use a document camera to model the spelling strategy.

There will be one file available to print to support learners with the spelling portion of the class. I'm looking forward to meeting your learner!

Learning Goals

Students will improve their decoding (reading) by repeated practice with CVC words. Learners will also build encoding (spelling) skills using the strategy learned.

Supply List
Please have your learner come to class with the printout (2 copies) and a pencil. You may choose to print 1 copy and use a sheet protector with dry erase marker instead.

Teacher expertise and credentials
For the last seven years, I have been a first grade teacher focusing on reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. I also taught Pre-K for four years, providing play-based foundational lessons in literacy and math. In addition, I taught English as a Second Language online to children in China for one year. I am also a proud Mom to three boys, ages 19, 15, and 13.

As a first grade teacher, I LOVE teaching reading and math to young learners while incorporating movement and brain breaks throughout my lessons! I especially enjoy supporting struggling readers by creating lessons on a wide range of topics (phonemic awareness, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension, phonics). I have a strong belief that children need movement to support their growing brains, and I love teaching classes that incorporate movement throughout. I am fluent in Spanish and will be adding beginning Spanish classes for young learners soon.
