Class Experience
In this ongoing class, each week we will learn a new phonics rule each week. These are skills typically taught in first grade but students that have reading struggles often need these concepts retaught and reinforced as they continue through school. On day one, we will practice making the sounds in isolation, blending with them into words, complete a word sort, and then play a game with our new words. On day two, we will practice with additional blending using word families, play a game,...
Students will hear the new sound in words. Students will identify the new sound in written words. Students will practice blending sounds in words to read them. Students will sort words by different sounds and/or spellings. Students will play a game to practice reading the new words. Students will participate in reading a decodable reader using new sounds
I am a licensed K-12 special education teacher with over 20 years of experience in the public schools teaching Kindergarten through 8th grade students. I have taught Pre-K - 5th grade reading and math skills to students from 3-15 for the last several years on Outschool with 100s of satisfied parents and learners.
Students will be given weekly materials then can print and use at home for additional practice with these words. While you are actively enrolled in this class you will be given exclusive access to my class on RAZkids for additional reading practice. It is recommended that students log in each week to listen to and practice our weekly book.
Pencil Paper or whiteboard Weekly handouts (provided) - please cut or assist your child in cutting sorts and word cards prior to class
In addition to the Outschool classroom, this class uses:
1 hour 20 minutes per week in class, and an estimated 0 - 1 hours per week outside of class.
Students will be given login access to kidsa-z.com. I will create their profile which will only contain their first name. They can use the site to read books at their reading level, listen to books, and take reading quizzes. No personal data is collected for your learner account.
