Homework
1 hour per week. Students will be given weekly materials then can print and use at home for additional practice with these words. While you are actively enrolled in this class you will be given exclusive access to my class on RAZkids for additional reading practice. It is recommended that students log in each week to listen to and practice our weekly book.

Class Experience

In this ongoing class, each week we will learn a new phonics rule each week.  These are skills typically taught in first grade but students that have reading struggles often need these concepts retaught and reinforced as they continue through school.  On day one,  we will practice making the sounds in isolation, blending with them into words, complete a word sort, and then play a game with our new words. On day two, we will practice with additional blending using word families, play a game, and read a book.  The materials used in the class will require some adult assistance to prepare before class. In addition, students will be given materials to practice the sounds at home.   This includes exclusive access to my RAZkids classroom with tons of books and additional materials.

This class is for learners who struggle with reading and are reading two or more grade levels behind who know their consonant and short vowel sounds, some blends/digraphs, and the silent e rule.   They are able to use these rules to blend CVC and CVCe and read these words with support.  Parents should be nearby to help with any technology issues but do not necessarily need to sit with their child. Of course, parents are welcome to sit off camera with their learner if they wish or their child needs additional support. Below are the sounds studied in each unit:

May 14 & 16: Week 16 - Soft Consonants C, G
May 21 &23: Week 17 - Final Soft Consonant G 
May 28 & 30: Week 18 - Long /a/ Vowel Digraphs
Jun 4 & 6: Week 19 -  Long /o/ Vowel Digraphs 
Jun 11 &13: Week 20 - Silent K, Inflectional Ending -est
Jun 18 & 20 - NO CLASS
Jun 25 & 27: Week 21 - Long /i/ Vowel Pattern: I, igh
: Week 22 - Diphthong /oi/
: Week 23 -  Diphthong /ou/
: Week 24  - R-Controlled /ar/ like car
: Week 25 - R-Controlled /er/ like turn, shirt, and fern 
: Week 26 - R-Controlled /or/ like born, tore, pour
: Week 27 -  R-Controlled /air/ like hair, bear
Learning Goals
Students will hear the new sound in words.
Students will identify the new sound in written words.
Students will practice blending sounds in words to read them.
Students will sort words by different sounds and/or spellings.
Students will play a game to practice reading the new words.
Students will participate in reading a decodable reader using new sounds

Other Details

Learning Needs
This class includes explicit, multi-sensory, systematic phonics which is recommended for students with Dyslexia. I am a licensed special education teacher with experience teaching students with ADHD, ASD, and many other learning needs.
Parental Guidance
Students will be given login access to kidsa-z.com. I will create their profile which will only contain their first name. They can use the site to read books at their reading level, listen to books, and take reading quizzes. No personal data is collected for your learner account.
Pre-Requisites
Student should know all their letter sounds, confidently read CVC words (ie. fan, cat, dog); read words with blends/digraphs (ie. fish, flag, bath); read words with silent e (ie. cape, home). Ready to learn vowel teams & r-controlled vowels
