45 mins in-class hoursClass Experience
There will be A LOT packed into this class! This is the outline of the course: 1) Review a vowel sound for CVC words We will only cover 1 sound a class in order to master that sound! The middle vowel sound will be one of the following: (a, e, i, o, u). I will be using an interactive presentation to "break down" the sounds! The presentation also includes pictures of the words we will sound out! 2) Spelling Game We will take turns spelling simple CVC words. There will be pictures associated with each word. The word may have one letter missing, two letters missing, or all letters missing! I will help the learner to isolate each sound and choose the letter that makes that sound. The learner will tell me which letter to choose and we will spell the word together! 3) Rhyming Game We will review what makes a word rhyme and go over some examples together. We will recognize words that are real, but we will also accept "nonsense" words that rhyme! We will also play an interactive game where each learner will take turns recognizing rhyming words. Some words in the game will be incorrect and some will be correct, and the learner will have to determine whether it is right or wrong! I will of course be guiding as needed. 4) Make a "Word Family" Craft. Document will be uploaded with course materials. This will be a great way for learners to practice writing as well! We will be making this word family craft together as a class with input from everyone. However, they can also make their own at home using the same document! 5) Interactive story time This will help us to incorporate all the things we have gone over in the lesson. During the story, the words will light up or become more distinct as I read them. This will allow the learners to recognize each word. 6) CVC Tic Tac Toe or CVC Bingo Only if time allows. This is always a favorite game for learners, and frequently what they tell me is their favorite part of the lesson! This game may include blending a different vowel than the one we reviewed in class.
Learning Goals
Students will improve their ability to sound out CVC (consonant- vowel- consonant) words, practice rhyming, work on their writing skills, and practice spelling.
We will be reviewing letters and sounds, but we will not be spending much class time on learning the sound a letter makes. The learner will be more successful if they know the alphabet and can recognize different letters and sounds before the class begins. This class focuses on blending letters to form words!
*This class is for students who have a fundamental understanding of the alphabet. If your learner has not mastered letter names and sounds, I offer a Level 1 version of this course that may be better suited for your learner!*
Other Details
Supply List
A "Word Family" document will be available for each class. Please print so that your child can fill out the craft during class with me! I will be using additional supplementary materials, but you will not need to print them before class or use them outside of class time! *If you are unable to print the craft, a piece of paper will work fine!* I will also be including some materials that your learner can practice with at home!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
