Class Experience
*This is a Flex class, which means the course does not have a weekly live meeting Prerequisite: Students should be able to decode kindergarten level text. Students should also be able to read cvc words and simple sight words. This class was developed from my high demand, face-to-face ongoing class with a similar name. This Flex class will receive the same material and same teaching as my live class. This class is designed for students who are reading at a beginning first grade level who need to focus on phonics, regardless of age. In this virtual classroom, students will receive explicit phonics directions, participate in our phonics activity, and play a phonics game with the class. Students will learn that there are predictable relationships between sounds and letters allows them to apply these relationships to both familiar and unfamiliar words. This will help them to begin to read with fluency. Each Sunday, I will upload a new virtual classroom which includes a video (recorded by the teacher) that introduces the week's word family. I present words from the word family, and we will practice reading the words together. Then, we will find the words in a first grade reading passage. We will read the text together, and I will support students to answer the comprehension questions. The answers for the questions are found directly in the text. Students will also have access to print the text/questions or students can write their response on a paper/whiteboard. Students should upload a picture of their responses into the classroom. This Flexible class has an added bonus that my live class does not have. Each week, we will play a game similar to "I have, you have" using the lesson's phonics sound. We will upload a video, in the classroom, responding to your classmates and me. All activities should be completed by Friday. The virtual classroom will also include additional resources for students to use. A weekly Q&A thread will be available for students who have questions. I am also available to students through direct message and will respond to questions within 24 hours. I expect students to interact with each other by responding to questions or comments through out the week. Below are the phonics lessons: -an word family -it word family -ot word family -ug word family -ed word family Standards Phonological Awareness: CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.2 Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).
