Phonemic Awareness Student Assessment

The PAST is used to identify gaps in a student's phonological awareness development, and is also an excellent tool for ongoing progress monitoring.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 5
"The best predictor of reading difficulty in kindergarten or first grade is the inability to segment words and syllables into constituent sound units (phonemic awareness)"

This is a 1:1 class where the teacher will administer the PAST assessment. The PAST assessment is a portion of a formal screening I do to assess student's reading in my private practice, and can shed a lot of light as to where your child is developmentally as a reader.

Upon registering you are welcome to submit a writing sample for analysis. There is a lot I can see in a student writing sample. I will need this sent via message prior to the start of class.

Depending on the student the actual assessment can take as little as 10 minutes. Extra time can be spent introducing some exercises that will benefit students with any level of Phonemic awareness. I will try and set aside the last last 5 minutes or so for the reviewing of scores, and answering questions.

Learning Goals

This assessment will give you a look inside how your child’s mind is manipulating language. Phoneme manipulation is a skill critical to becoming a good reader.

I am a Reading specialist at a high need title 1 school. I also have a private practice where I provide intervention to students who have dyslexia. Teaching reading is my favorite thing in the world. If you are struggling or just need support I would love to be a resource to any family working to improve their child’s reading fluency/comprehension
