Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 2
This is an optional class to be used before, during or after my "Reading Readiness: Daily Phonemic Awareness" class. Whenever the parent would like an assessment of ability or progress they can schedule this class. There are three forms of this test.

I will put the description of the related class here:
I will be using the Heggerty Kindergarten Phonemic Awareness Curriculum to teach children who are already identified as "struggling" with reading. After reaching out to the Heggerty company and receiving permission, I am pleased to be able to offer these lessons on Outschool. The explicitness (direct instruction with continual response from each student) and intensity (five days a week) of this small group class qualifies it as tier two intervention. If your child already understands rhyming, blending, segmenting, counting syllables and words they probably don't need this. If your child is below grade level in reading they probably lack phonemic awareness skills. These skills develop slowly, with lots of repetition and practice. This is why we need to meet five times a week.

The program is 35 weeks long. You can sign-up for seven weeks at a time. The title of the class will tell you what seven weeks it is. Your child should go through the entire 35 weeks unless you schedule an assessment with me. The results of the assessment may help me place the student in a more appropriate section of the program. We start with phonological awareness (words and syllables) and start getting into phonemic awareness (individual sounds) in week nine. The students will respond in unison for most of the activities. I will ask for individual responses on a regular basis. I will provide a link to the Heggerty video and will sometimes use the video to teach.

There are ten skills taught in each lesson: rhyming, onset fluency, blending, isolating final or medial phonemes, segmenting, adding, deleting, substituting, alphabet knowledge, and language awareness. Each Heggerty lesson will typically take about fifteen minutes (longer if the students are struggling). For the last fifteen minutes we will practice sequencing sounds (repeating three sounds in a row, helps with auditory memory and discrimination), and reinforcing sound awareness with games on Wordwall.com.
Learning Goals
Parent and teacher will gain insight about the student's phonological/phonemic awareness skills.

Hi everyone! I'm very thankful to be added to this wonderful group of amazing teachers and super students! I'm a homeschool mom + reading specialist + ESL teacher. We have 8 kids ages 14-29 so homeschooling has been part of my life for a long time. I found out early on that my favorite thing to teach is reading. It's such an important skill! I use the Barton Reading and Spelling System for most of the reading teaching that I do. More recently I have discovered teaching English online. I thoroughly enjoy teaching children in China to speak our beautiful language. I'm so excited to have found a fantastic ESL program called Off2Class that I can use with kids on Outschool.
I have a Bachelor's degree in sociology and education from the State University of New York at Fredonia. I've been teaching in a variety of settings ever since. This includes homeschool (pre-k through 12th grade), children's programs at church, two private Christian schools, private tutoring business and online ESL (VIPKid).
I love seeing kids smile during class and I understand the importance of student engagement and participation in the learning process. I will provide lots of opportunities for your student to interact with me and the learning materials. Let's have a great time improving reading and English skills!
