Philosophy & the Hunger Games: Catching Fire
Class experience
During this class, students will be taught differing philosophical viewpoints on luck, morality, fate, and hope through the lens of The Hunger Games Trilogy. Students will also learn the names and thoughts of certain philosophers connected to topics studied during this class. Some of the philosophers that students will be introduced to during this course are as follows: Nicholas Rescher, Immanuel Kant, Simone Weil, Thomas Nagel, Arthur Schopenhauer, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Marcel Mauss....
Students will gain a basic knowledge of certain philosophers' views on fate, hope, luck, and morality. These concepts will be made more accessible to students and easier for them to understand because they will be explained through the events, characters, and ideas presented in The Hunger Games Trilogy.
I will address the topics of violence and death in a sensitive and compassionate manner. I have taught works of literature that feature these topics to students in a public school setting, in a co-op setting, and to my own children in a homeschool setting. I am a certified teacher and also a writer. I read The Hunger Games Trilogy and also viewed the movies and am quite familiar with the series. I have previously studied philosophy in connection with The Hunger Games. I will be using the following books as resources: The Hunger Games and Philosophy, edited by George A. Dunn and Nicolas Michaud The Hunger Games Trilogy, by Suzanne Collins I took a Philosophy course in college; this is where my interest in Philosophy first blossomed. I've continued to read books about philosophers and study philosophy ever since. Also, I have taught my homeschooled students Philosophy courses in high school.
A copy of each book in The Hunger Games Trilogy would be helpful, but it is not required. I will provide all other materials.
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
There will be scenes of violence and death read and discussed.
I teach Literature, Writing, Poetry, Mythology, and Folklore classes for Middle and High School. I also teach a small selection of classes for elementary-aged students and preschoolers. I have a BS in Elementary Education and a MA in English. I...
