Week 1Lesson 1Unraveling Ideas: Discovery vs. Invention and How Do We Know What Is True.Students will be introduced to the process of inquiry and the structure of logical statements. Through Socratic discussion students will explore the concepts of discovery vs, invention and how we know what is true.Week 2Lesson 2Unraveling Identity: Exploring the Question: What Makes You You?Socratic discussion students will explore what makes us who we are. Students will start thinking about how ideas and inventions impact our daily lives and help to shape us into the people we want to be.Week 3Lesson 3Unlocking Understanding: Figuring Things Out and the Reality of ThoughtsStudents will explore what it means to figure things out, the role of assumptions in our lives, where our thoughts come from and if they are real.Week 4Lesson 4Decoding Relationships: Exploring TeasingStudents will explore teasing-harmful or harmless, the concepts of fairness, what it means to jump to conclusions, and the role of imagination in exploring logic.Week 5Lesson 5Boredom Unpacked: Exploring the Relationship Between Thought and UnderstandingStudents will think about boredom and how it can lead to thinking. Through Socratic Discussion students will the importance of precision in speaking, how this leads to understanding, and what it means to truly understand.Week 6Lesson 6Defining The Purpose Of EducationStudents will explore the purpose of education, why do they want an education, and what we mean when we call something good and right.Week 7Lesson 7What It Means To Think For OneselfStudents will explore what it means to think oneself. Explore what makes a question a good question, and how our perceptions impact our thinking.Week 8Lesson 8Mind vs. Brain: Are They The Same Thing?Students will explore the different concepts of the mind and understand what they think the mind is or is not.Week 9Lesson 9Cultural Exploration: What Is Culture And Its Role In Being HumanStudents will discuss culture, how human culture is or is not different than other animals, how culture impacts our thoughts, and the impact of being inventive on our culture.Week 10Lesson 10Degrees and Kinds: The Nuances of ThoughtsStudents will explore differences of degree and kind in regards to thinking. Develop an understanding of the different styles of thought, and figure out differences between qualities and quantities.Week 11Lesson 11Exploring the Concepts of Good and RightStudents will explore in depth why we call some things good and right. Students will develop an understanding if good and right are the same thing and why something might be good but not right.Week 12Lesson 12Navigating Disagreement: Exploring When And How We Should DisagreeStudents will explore relationships and disagreements. Students will develop an understanding of how disagreements can be perceived and how to navigate those moments.
This class is taught in English.
The following reasoning skills will be developed: Deductive reasoning, inductive reasoning, sequential reasoning, analogical reasoning, drawing inferences, coming to conclusions, use of evidence, focused inquiry, making sense of phenomena, and being able to see the "big picture".
I have been a student of philosophy for most of my life. I studied for 4 years with with a student of Matthew Lipman whose teachings this class is based on.
Philosophy by its very nature raises questions. This course will challenge the students to question everything they think they know. This can lead to uncomfortable conversations within a family structure.
