Phenomenon of the Month: Sound Energy

During this one-time 45 minute lesson, students will learn about sound energy by engaging in various demonstrations, experiments, & discussions. The Phenomenon of the Month series is designed to help spark children’s curiosity of science!

Class Experience

Describe how sound is created by the vibration of objects 
Recognize that sound energy can be seen, felt & heard
Describe sound in terms of wavelength, pitch and frequency.
Define sound energy and vibration
Determine that sound travels through solids, liquids & gases (air)
Recognize uses of sound energy in the real world
There is no homework that will be assigned. My hope is that students will take the scientific concepts taught during this lesson and try them out on their own - exploring and experimenting even more around this topic!

Materials are not a requirement for this class. However, if students would like to participate by trying the demonstrations and experiments as I teach them, here are the materials that would be helpful: Balloons Hex Nuts Plastic Straw Scissors Guitar or Musical Instrument Rubber Band Metal or Wooden Spatula Drum or Bowl with Plastic Tightly Wrapped Sprinkles or Rice Bowl of Water Tuning Fork Ping Pong Ball
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
45 minutes per week in class, and maybe some time outside of class.
