Class Experience

During this engaging class, we will learn about couplet poems and create some about space and aliens. A couplet poem usually has 2 lines that rhyme. Additionally, each line has about the same number of syllables. For example, "star" and "far" could be incorporated. Students will be given examples and support throughout the writing process. Notably, we will discuss space, aliens, rhyming, nouns, and adjectives. The focus will be on creativity and using our imagination. But, I'll also recognize and appreciate scientific facts. I'll encourage everyone to share a poem or at least a portion of their wonderful writing. Learners often inspire me and each other with their fresh, funny, and interesting ideas. My friendly personality helps facilitate learning and conversations.

Learners will need paper, pencils, and an eraser. I attached a lesson document, but they don't need it. I will share my screen, but feel free to print it out before or after class. If they want, learners can dress up like an alien or wear something that pertains to space. They can also share something that's relevant (like a planet picture or toy.)

Teacher expertise and credentials
This is a fun poetry class. So, the focus will be on creativity and using our imagination to write some rhyming lines about space and aliens. (That's me dressed up as an alien for Halloween, and I will likely wear something similar to class.) I'll also recognize and appreciate scientific facts. I taught classes about space to students in elementary school while working as an after-school science instructor. Outschool learners do not have to write about things they do not like or believe in. A wide array of topics are relevant (e.g., stars, the moon, planets, astronauts, and aliens.) For example, one learner may want to write about an imaginary unicorn alien, and that's cool. Additionally, I'll also praise a space enthusiast who wants to rhyme about Mars.
