Class Experience

US Grade Kindergarten - 3
Let's have some fun with delicious a science lesson! In this one-time course, students will learn about the phases of the moon and what causes them. We will explore each phase and why the moon's appearance changes. We will learn key vocabulary such as orbit, waxing, waning, crescent, gibbous, new moon, and full moon. Then, I will demonstrate and lead learners through creating an edible model of the phases of the moon using Oreo cookies or another type of sandwich style cookie. If learners do not have these types of cookies available, they can still participate and can use a writing utensil of their choice to draw each phase.

This class is a great introduction to the relationship between the sun, Earth, and moon, as well as the names of each phase of the moon. This will be a very interactive class and student participation will be highly encouraged.

Learning Goals

Students will be able to name and describe/model the 8 phases of the moon, and explain why they occur.

Hello! I am Ms. Katie. I teach classes of different interests and topics for young learners. I have a passion for this age group and love to interact with my students in fun and engaging ways!

I believe that learning should be FUN and that even our youngest learners should have the opportunity to express themselves while developing and following their own interests. I strive to make my classroom a safe, engaging space where all learners feel comfortable doing so. I also believe in tailoring learning to a student's development, interests, and abilities. I have enjoyed the freedom to provide such educational experiences to my own children whom I homeschool, and love doing the same for my learners now on Outschool!

I have taught in a variety of settings and environments for the last 13 years. I have been a teacher for over 10 years. I spent 9 years in the public education system as a classroom teacher, 3 in 3rd grade and 6 in Kindergarten. I taught the entire 2020-21 school year virtually, to 50 Kindergarten students! I have years of experience in learning support, gifted support, autism support, emotional support. I have also helped to run an outdoor, nature-centered camp for children ages 4-14. I served as an Envirothon coach for grades 3 and 4, and helped to start and run a "Storybook STEM" club for elementary aged children. I have my Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education and my Master's Degree in Education. I am also a Google Certified Educator.

On a personal note, I love being outside, hiking, reading, traveling, baking, and being a mom to my own 3 young children who also love to take classes on Outschool.
