💡 Beginners to both D&D 5e and Play-by-Post welcome! 🌿 Explore the Sword Coast, Neverwinter, and the areas around, all wild and unpredictable, full of wonder and danger! 🕵️♀️ Find the Lost Mine of Phandelver and uncover its long-lost secrets and power! ⚔️ Face memorable enemies from foul monsters to unhospitable shopkeepers! -- Official description: In Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk, journey to the beloved town of Phandalin, where a malevolent cult threatens to overtake the region. Together with your party, solve mysteries and stamp out growing corruption as you uncover more about the peculiar happenings plaguing the town. Discover what lurks below in this high-fantasy adventure that begins with the familiar story of Lost Mine of Phandelver and then delves into the perilous Underdark. -- Dungeons and Dragons is is collaborative storytelling game. It is a game of vast possibilities where you learn to think carefully, to plan, to strategize, to persuade, to resolve conflict, to collaborate, to express yourself more clearly, and so much more, all while exploring memorable locales, meeting fascinating characters in the story, and defeating powerful enemies. In this course, we will play through "Phandelver and Below: The Shattered Obelisk," an official D&D module for beginners (though I will modify it significantly). This module will take your character from Level 1 to about Level 12 as you explore the region surrounding the city of Neverwinter, battle with various creatures, get to know the citizens of the local towns, and unfold a story of adventure and intrigue. This course will give students a great deal of experience in the details, rules, and mechanics of Dungeons and Dragons. In the course students will also grow close with the other students they are adventuring with and learn to communicate clearly, work together, and treat one another with respect. After completing this course, students will be confident in the rules of D&D and can continue on to another adventure or begin running one of their own for family and/or friends. Please note that this is an ongoing course as it is impossible to give a specific number of meetings because that depends how the story develops in the hands of the students. Compared to other campaigns, though, this is considered a medium-length campaign (meaning likely three months). If you must leave at some point, please don't worry about your fellow classmates. We will exit your character and bring in another student in a way that progresses the story. Note: You must have your video on for these sessions and be unmuted as often as you can. D&D is a game of community and collaboration, of experiencing, struggling, and laughing together. If you cannot actively participate, please do not enroll. Reach out to me if you have questions about this.

Other Details
Parental Guidance
Though there is combat in this game, it is described in words, not images. I will also ask and require students to be conscious of their descriptions, avoiding anything grotesque or inhumane.
Supply List
Students will need a completed character which I will check before the first session (students who completed 102 with me have one but may create another manually or use dndbeyond.com). Students would benefit from a copy of the Player's Handbook: https://www.amazon.com/Players-Handbook-Dungeons-Dragons-Wizards/dp/0786965606/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=player%27s+handbook&qid=1609709577&sr=8-3 . If they cannot purchase this, they can access a copy of the Basic Rules online for free: https://dnd.wizards.com/articles/features/basicrules
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
To prepare and run this course, I will use my experience and knowledge of (as well as references to) "The Player's Handbook", "The Dungeon Master's Guide", "The Monster Manual", and the module "The Lost Mine of Phandelver".

Teacher expertise and credentials
I have spent a great deal of time playing in and running Dungeons and Dragons campaigns. I also have much experience teaching D&D to new players. As far as teaching children goes, I've spent over a decade teaching ages 8-18 in the classroom in subjects ranging from Geometry and Algebra to Latin to Rhetoric, Literature, and Political Philosophy. I have served in many roles from Master Teacher to Head of Curriculum to Network Trainer to Academy Headmaster (all with Great Hearts Academies).
