Week 1Lesson 1Interview Essay -- Building Genre Vocabulary- Students will be introduced to their first portfolio assignment, an interview essay. - Students will demonstrate the ability to use clarifying vs. probing questions. - Students will create clarifying and probing questions by engaging in think-pair share activities. - Students will listen to a story as a class, and prepare questions for the narrator. They will label the questions as clarifying or probing.Week 2Lesson 2Interview Essay -- Structuring Interview Questions and Annotating texts- Students will review the concepts of clarifying vs. probing. - Student will practice asking each other clarifying vs. probing questions. - I will model how to apply the concepts of clarifying vs. probing to reading a mentor text. - Students will receive mentor texts (sample narrative essays that were created from interview questions). - Students will learn how to annotate readings using clarifying and probing questions so that we can prepare to discuss the writer's moves.Week 3Lesson 3Interview Essay -- Learning how to evaluate questions and texts- Students will choose a prompt from the Interview Essay assignment, and create questions for their interviewee. - Students will evaluate each other's questions, and prepare to start writing their draft during the next class session. - Students will annotate a sample interview article and discuss the writing moves of the author. They will also write their reactions to the overall article to prepare for the socratic seminar.Week 4Lesson 4Interview Essay -- Modeling Writing and Preparing for Peer Editing- Students will engage in a socratic seminar. - I will model how to start writing the interview essay and introduce how to write thesis statements and claims. - Students will write their essay and prepare for peer editing next week. (During these sessions I will engage with informal writing conferences with students)Week 5Lesson 5Interview Essay -- Engaging in the editing process- I will model how to peer edit a paper. - Students will exchange drafts and peer edit. - Discuss the editing process. - Allow students to edit their work. (During these sessions I will engage with informal writing conferences with students) - Students will turn in their final draft next week. ( Students will be reminded that in their portfolio, they will turn in their first and final draft and peer editing notes.)Week 6Lesson 6Interview Essay -- Engaging in Growth- Students will compile their final project: interview notes, peer editing notes, and drafts. - Students will engage in both an oral and written reflection about how they have changed as writers. - Students will also offer suggestions for me as a teacher.
- Students will learn how to gather information and create original thesis statements. - Students will understand how to use clarifying and probing questions during the reading, writing, and discussion activities. - Students will learn how to receive and give feedback to their peers. - Students will learn how to engage in all parts of the writing process.
Homework Offered
The amount of homework is dependent upon the student. I will definitely allow time in class for students to complete tasks and ask questions, but I do expect their assignments to be ready for all class activities. All assignments will be required for all students, and if modifications are necessary, they will be made on a case-by-case basis.2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assessments Offered
The narrative writing will be the final assessment, but activities such as discussions and peer editing activities will be used an assessments to determine how students are applying the concepts taught during the class.Grades Offered
