Class Experience
Have you ever dreamed of playing the fiddle, or mandolin but weren’t sure where to start? Struggling with technique, practice methods, or finding the right pieces to play? You’ve come to the right place! As a passionate, dedicated teacher, I’m here to help you make progress and achieve your musical goals. My students often appreciate my patience, clear communication, and ability to adapt to their unique needs. In our first lesson, I’ll likely ask you to share your current skills—whether through a demonstration or a discussion about what you already know. This will help me understand your strengths and areas for growth. By the end of our session, you’ll have some learning materials, a clear path forward, and an inspiring start to our musical journey together! Here are some key areas we’ll often focus on during lessons: Expanding Your Repertoire: Learning new pieces is one of the most rewarding parts of playing an instrument! Whatever your skill level, I’ll help you explore new songs that align with your interests and goals. Ear Training: A good ear for music can be developed with practice! I’ll guide you through fun exercises and games to help you improve your listening skills and deepen your connection to the music you love. Music Reading: If you’re interested in reading music, this skill will open up a wide range of possibilities and musical styles for you. Improvisation: While improvising may seem intimidating at first, it’s an incredibly freeing and rewarding skill that can enhance your overall musicianship. Jamming: With the skills you’ll develop in our lessons, plus some knowledge of musical structures, you’ll soon be ready to jump into a jam session! I’m excited to help you reach the point where you can make music with others. Music Theory: A strong grasp of music theory is key to understanding how music is structured. We’ll start with the basics—like notes and chords—and work our way up to concepts like the circle of fifths and key signatures. Technique: Mastering the techniques needed to play your instrument can be challenging at first, but once you get the hang of it, playing will feel much easier. I’ll be there to guide you and offer tips to help you improve along the way.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi everyone! My name is Alani, and I'm excited to be teaching here on Outschool!
I teach violin, fiddle, and mandolin! I love teaching students of all levels, from total beginner to advanced, and all ages. I am passionate about teaching music online in one-on-one and small group contexts, and have done so on several online learning platforms as well as independently.
I believe that everyone's connection to music is different, which means their goals and values will be different too! Everyone should be able to learn and achieve their goals along with a supportive and positive teacher, like me! My students have told me that I am a good communicator, and that I am very patient and meet students where they are.
Aside from being a lover of music, I also am a fanatic of languages and travel! I learned Spanish in the height of the pandemic, and since then have enjoyed traveling in parts of South America, Europe, and Asia. I have traveled to a total of 9 countries!
**A quick note on my policies: If you have to cancel a lesson, please let me know as soon as possible. Cancellations are not eligible for refunds. If the cancellation was out of your control (sickness, power outage, technical difficulties, etc.), I can offer to reschedule in the same week, subject to my availability. Cancellations that are in your control (scheduling mishap, forgot about the lesson, etc.) and no call/no shows are not eligible for reschedules. Please let me know if you have any questions about this policy.**
