The following learning goals will help guide the instruction in each session and ensure that students make progress in their reading skills. Please keep in mind, these learning goals are contingent upon your child's age and current independent reading level. Some learners may have already mastered some of these skills, while some learners may not be ready to begin some of the more advanced learning goals yet. 1. Increased Confidence and Motivation: A goal of the class may also be to build students' confidence and motivation as readers. Through individualized instruction, positive feedback, and engaging reading materials, students should develop a love of reading and a belief in their own ability to succeed. 2. Improved Decoding: One of the primary goals of the class may be to improve students' decoding skills, which is the ability to read words accurately and fluently. Students will be able to accurately decode unfamiliar words, and read common sight words with ease. 3. Increased Reading Fluency: Fluency refers to the ability to read with speed, accuracy, and expression. Through targeted instruction and practice, students should be able to read fluently and expressively with appropriate phrasing, pacing, and intonation. 4. Expanded Vocabulary: A key goal of the class may be to help students develop a robust vocabulary that enables them to comprehend and analyze more complex texts. Students will learn new words in context and understand how to use context clues to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words. 5. Improved Comprehension: Comprehension is the ability to understand and make meaning from what is being read. Students will be able to summarize, draw inferences, and make connections between texts and their own experiences. Students will be able to comprehend and analyze a range of texts, including fiction and non-fiction, and respond to questions about what they have read.
