Explore the "superpowers" of the periodic table with this fun, interactive class! Learn about the elements of the periodic table, then design your own superhero based on the element of your choice. Will your character be radioactive? Life-giving? Perhaps metallic, electric, or magnetic? The universe is the limit! This experience is perfect for learners who love art, comics, and science, and would enjoy designing a brand new superhero with "element powers". No previous knowledge of chemistry or the periodic table is necessary to enjoy this class. Students will be provided with examples of completed superhero characters to provide inspiration, but will leave class with a unique new character - and a new appreciation for chemistry! Needed supplies: -Provided printouts -Pencil -Eraser -Scrap paper -Coloring supplies of your choice Students who would like to draw digitally are also welcome!
Learning Goals
Students will define an element and give a variety of examples.
Students will locate elements on the periodic table, noting how the periodic table is organized and what information it provides.
Students will identify key features of a chosen element and design a character based on these features.
Students will choose relevant symbols, shapes, colors, and attributes to illustrate their chosen element.
