Class Experience

Each week in this ongoing class learners will begin by warming up their muscles and stretching to improve flexibility. We will then move into upbeat and active jazz dance instruction, having fun while learning the basics of jazz technique, and moving to fun, upbeat music! We will do both floor work in the center, and movements across the room. Learners will be taught 3-5 jazz steps or moves each class, and will be given the opportunity to practice and perform during class.

This is a hands-on class and will follow a similar format each week. I will demonstrate each move and encourage the learners to follow along. We will cover a variety of jazz steps including: Plié, Relevé, Tendu, Skips, Gallops, Rock Turn, Ball Change, Front and Side Battement, beginning Chaîné turns, Russian Jumps, Split Leaps, and more! We will begin each lesson with the basics, and build on that depending on the learners' level in that class, and so no prior knowledge or skills are necessary. This is an ongoing class and will be learner-led, and so each week's focus will be dictated by the learners.

I am a fun and engaging teacher, am very flexible and can switch directions depending on the learners' needs. My goal is to create a safe and warm classroom, where learners feel accepted and encouraged to be their true selves. We will play games to reinforce our learning and to have a fun space to practice our technique. Learners will have the opportunity to share their ideas with peers and the teacher.

Jazz Dance is a physical activity, and so adult supervision throughout class is recommended as there is always a level of risk associated with any physical activity. Please have a clear space available (at least 4X4 ft square) so your learner can move about freely and safely while standing and on the floor. They are also encouraged to have a water bottle close by and will have the opportunity for a drink break.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if there's anything additional I can do to make your child more at ease in my classes. I look forward to seeing you in class!

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, and welcome! My name is Teacher Mallory, and I am so glad to be here and be part of your child's learning. I have been a teacher in varying capacities for over twenty years.

I began as a dance teacher, and I specialized in tap, jazz, ballet, and Irish dance for learners ages 3 to adult. I loved watching my three-year-olds grow up with me and continue to teach them into their teen years. I taught recreational and competitive level dance routines, and enjoyed developing my leadership skills while also having the opportunity to express my creative side.

While I was a University student, I facilitated an afterschool club for children in grades JK - grade 6 at my local community center. Myself, along with a team of teachers, lead craft activities and small games before heading into the gym for physical exercise and organized sports.

Most recently I have been a librarian working in public libraries. In this role, I have developed workshops for learners of all ages from 0-100! My passion is early literacy and story time; I enjoy helping young children develop reading fundamentals and grow into life-long learners. As a librarian, I frequently take the opportunity to research new and different subjects, to constantly expand my expertise.

I have also been a virtual ESL teacher for children ages 4-15. This has been an incredible opportunity to develop my online teaching ability, to grow my virtual classroom, and to explore teaching in a new form! I'm thrilled to continue this opportunity with Outschool, and have the pleasure of teaching children from all over the world!

My most important job of all has been being a mom of two boys, ages 8 and 6. We did home preschool together, and explored fun and interactive ways to develop their early literacy and early math abilities. I have attended Ontario's "Spring into Literacy Conference" where I learned practical tips for engaging with early years learners (ages 0-6). We continued our homeschooling adventure throughout the pandemic, and they have really flourished as a result, as have I!

I enjoy traveling and outdoor sports such as biking, swimming, and hockey with my family. I am a lifelong learner, and cannot wait to meet your child, to watch them grow and learn while having fun and making new friends around the world along the way!
