Class Experience

This class is a fun introduction to one-point perspective drawing and a variety of techniques for young artists! We'll learn what perspective drawing is, and why and how it works! We'll also learn color theory, how to mix and blend different colors with colored pencils and paint and some fun techniques to use with watercolor paint. At the end of these three classes, learners will have created a masterpiece which demonstrates their knowledge of all of these important artistic skills and also expresses their unique personality and creativity!
In our first class, we will begin with a presentation and group discussion about perspective drawing and the meaning of one point perspective, including how to use a vanishing point, horizon line, and perspective lines. We will briefly discuss several drawings and photographs to clarify these concepts for learners. We will then work together step by step to draw some basic shapes in one point perspective. Once learners have mastered the techniques for basic and more advanced shapes together as a class, they will be encouraged to use what they have learned to add their own objects, letters, numbers, etc. that have personal significance for them to their drawing. In every class, learners will be encouraged to share what they have created, if desired.
In our second class, we will begin by briefly reviewing perspective drawing concepts and will also discuss color theory and the use of the color wheel. We will work together step by step to practice colored pencil blending and shading techniques on a separate sheet of paper. After our practice, students will use what they have learned to add color and details to their perspective drawings. I will demonstrate how to add shading, blending, patterns, and a variety of effects and students may choose to use similar techniques on their artwork or to use other methods of their choice to embellish their perspective drawings.
In our final class, we will work together step by step to learn some watercolor paint techniques. We will discuss some ideas for completing the background of our perspective drawings. Learners will then use watercolor paint (or another media of their choice) to add details to the background of their artwork. We will also learn how to use one point perspective drawing techniques to create a cityscape from a bird's eye view. Artists will be encouraged to share and discuss their amazing masterpieces with the class!

I focus on building skills, self-confidence, and personal artistic expression in all of my classes. My teaching style is fun, easy going, patient and encouraging and all levels of artistic ability are welcome!

Hello everyone! I am Katee Gebo and I'm passionate about teaching art! My number one priority is to nurture the personal creativity of my students and foster their love for art! I want every child to be confident in the knowledge that they are already wonderful artists and have amazing ideas to share through their art! (This is absoluteIy true - I am blown away and inspired by the ideas and creativity of my learners every day!)
I have been a certified art teacher for 19 years and have a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art and a Master's degree in Art Education. I am also a working artist. My favorite media has always been oil paint, although I have really been enjoying exploring my work with ink and watercolors too!
I love to use art to foster children’s natural critical and creative thinking and communication skills. While creating art, we will also be learning about different artists, historical events, and different cultures. I believe that almost anything can be taught through art in a fun and engaging manner. I have loved seeing the knowledge, thoughtfulness, communication skills, artistic skills, and creativity of my students blossom during my art classes at Virtual da Vinci Online Art Academy, and now at Outschool!
As a teacher, I am much more concerned with the process, not the product. I often focus on abstract and non-objective art, (especially with younger students) and a variety of artists, so that children do not become overly concerned with imitating the representational art of adults and feel discouraged if their work is not realistic. I work on skills for realism as well, but I focus on learning how to observe carefully what you really see rather than a "how to draw" or "directed drawing" approach so that children gain the skills and confidence they need to create their own unique art that is meaningful and personal to them.
My goal in teaching art is for children to learn to view themselves as creative artists with interesting ideas, develop skills and self-confidence in their abilities, learn how to express themselves visually, and to be persistent, make mistakes, take chances, and, most of all, have fun!!!
