Class Experience

The Lightning Thief is a light-hearted fantasy about a modern 12-year-old boy who learns that his true father is Poseidon, the Greek god of the sea. Percy sets out across the United States to find the Underworld to stop a war between the gods, and become the hero. The book also provides a humorous, interesting introduction to the Greek myths.

We will focus on reading the novel, engaging in thought provoking questions, and completing a variety of captivating activities, including making a lapbook that your child will create to recall important features of the book. A lapbook is an engaging way for students to assess their comprehension, while reading Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan. Some reading skills we will learn are analyzing the main character, identifying allusions, making connections, evaluating the novel, and extending our learning by researching Greek gods and writing our own Camp Half-Blood adventure.

The age range for this class can vary a bit more than other classes, depending on reading ability and interest level.

Supply List
Students will need a copy of the novel The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan.
They will also need a file folder (any color), crayons or markers, a pencil, and scissors.
Upon enrollment you will receive the first week's handouts that should be printed for class. I included a few pictures of the finished lapbook too, so you can see what we will be working on in class. This is a great book for a class literature unit. It is important that the student keep up with the weekly reading so we can complete the class activities in 8 weeks. This shouldn't be hard, because it is a fun novel that keeps the reader's attention. I will send the handouts out at the beginning of each week.
 3 files available upon enrollment
