"The Sea of Monsters" by Rick Riordan is the second book in the "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series. In this book, Percy Jackson takes on a quest to save his beloved Camp Half Blood. This book is a tale of Good vs Evil from the point of view of Percy. He must not only fight for the camp, but those around him that he cares about. This book combines the real world with the world of the Greek mythological gods such as Zeus and Poseidon. In each class we will focus on engaging discussions, vocabulary activities, and thought provoking comprehension questions. We will respond to literature homework questions in classroom posts (this is optional). I will also give students several great extension project activity suggestions. Students will analyze quotes and answer questions about the events in the novel. They must recall relevant details and use character traits, tone, word choice, etc., when discussing their thoughts and completing activities. Students will compare and contrast characters, character actions, motivations and word choice. The age range for this class can vary a bit more than other classes, depending on reading ability and interest level. Schedule: Week 1 - Read Chapters 1 - 3 (read before this class starts) Discussion, Pre-reading questions, Vocabulary, Comprehension questions for each chapter HW: Responses to literature homework questions for each chapter to be answered as classroom posts. Parental Guidance
There is some fantasy action violence, some scary images and mild language. There is actually some scary stuff in this sequel to Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Much more than in the first book. It is recommended for 10+
If time permits, at the end of each class we may play a review game on one of the following-
Blooket https://www.blooket.com/play
Gimkit https://www.gimkit.com/join
Kahoot https://kahoot.it/
Students will be provided a game code for each game. They are not required to sign up or login, unless they choose to.
Supply List
Students will need a copy of the novel The Sea Monsters: Percy Jackson and the Olympians Book 2 by Rick Riordan. Upon enrollment you will receive the first week's handouts. Students are expected to do the assigned readings at home. We will complete the majority of the handouts during class. I will give literature homework questions for each chapter that students can respond to as classroom posts. (This is optional). This is a great book for a class literature unit. It is important that the student keep up with the weekly reading so we can complete the class activities in 7 weeks. This shouldn't be hard because it is a fun novel that keeps the reader's attention. I have created class activities I think are meaningful and that the students will enjoy too. I will send the handouts out at the beginning of each week.
