Class Experience

Percy Jackson is back at it again in the second novel of the Olympians series by Rick Riordan. This time the magical borders that protect Camp Half-blood have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy who must be stopped before the only safe place for demigods is destroyed. We will explore this book as a class by analyzing the literary elements together, discussing the overarching themes (friendship, family, betrayal and identity) and learning effective reading strategies.

The class can be for the student who is reading or listening to the book for the first time or the seasoned Rick Riordan fan who has read the book more times than they can count!

The topics and activities will depend upon the make-up of the class, but will be organized as follows:

WEEK ONE: Pre-reading and Chapter 1
-Analyze character traits
-Visualizing activity of chapter 1
-Teach how to summarize at the end of each chapter, which will create a story summary by the end of the novel
-Vocabulary discussion

WEEK TWO: Chapters 2-5
-Literature Circle style discussion group
-Art activity (requires colored pencils or markers and drawing paper)
-Comprehension quiz game

WEEK THREE: Chapters 6-9
-Mind mapping of the story elements
-Greek monster visualizing guessing game in breakout pairs
-Group discussion

WEEK FOUR: Chapters 10-13
-Discussion groups
-Quiz game

WEEK FIVE: Chapters 14-17
-Return to literature circle groups for discussion
-Story Vocabulary game
-Begin trading cards and finish on your own

WEEK SIX: Chapters 18-20
-Tournament review game
-Discussion questions
-Put chapter summaries together to create a complete book summary

If I am not teaching or spending time with my family, I can be found with my nose in a book or testing new allergy-friendly baking recipes!

I hope to see your learner in class soon!
