The Percy Jackson books and movies can be a thrilling introduction to ancient mythology as well as a fun retelling of familiar stories and themes for mythology enthusiasts. We will go through the books and movies. Each week we will all come prepared to discuss the week’s relevant topics. This is a discussion format and active participation by all students is strongly encouraged. Students are strongly encouraged to bring their own questions, opinions, favorite passages and scenes, and any other constructive input to the weekly discussions. Students are encouraged to sign up starting with the first class but may join the discussion any week / at any time. Classes and topics: Week of January 15, 2023 - Spotlight on Poseidon - Discussion on the relevance of the deity Poseidon. Poseidon is Percy’s father and god of the sea. We will examine the historical canon as well as the use of Poseidon in the Percy-verse. Week of January 22, 2023 - Percy’s inner circle - who were [names] in ancient mythology and who are they in the Percy-verse. We will discuss the aspects of these characters in the context of their ancient namesakes. Week of January 29, 2023 - Spotlight on Zeus - Discussion on the relevance of the deity Zeus. Zeus is Percy’s uncle and king of the Olympian gods. We will examine the historical canon as well as the use of Zeus in the Percy-verse. Week of February 5, 2023 - Cyclops - these creatures play a significant role in the Percy-verse. We will discuss this as well as their role in the ancient mythology and belief systems. Week of February 12, 2023 - The Golden fleece - Percy’s quest for the Golden Fleece mirrors Jason in ancient mythology. We will discuss both, comparing and exploring our favorite elements. This is an ON-GOING class. Learners may add or drop at anytime.

Improve discussion skills and close reading / critical analysis skills.
Improve knowledge of ancient oral and written traditions. Facility with mythological characters, beasts and themes.
